#1_LAI Sharma Residence Site Stabilization Field Report 06-5-2020_SMGLANDAU 1AASSOCIATES Field Report Project No.: 0074203.050.051 Report No.: 1 Client/Owner: City of Edmonds/Amit Sharma Project Name: Sharma Residence Site Stabilization Location: 15712 72" d Ave West, Edmonds, Washington Weather Conditions: Cloudy, low 60s (F) Prepared By: Sean Gertz Date: 6/5/2020 Reviewed By: Steve Wright I arrived onsite at about 1:30 PM and met with Amit Sharma (property owner, Applicant) to observe excavation conditions pertaining to the stability of a City owned road that the proposed wall will support. When I arrived on -site, the Contractor (G2 Contracting) was in the process of constructing a temporary ecology block wall to allow for the construction of the eastern basement wall of the residence. Within the sidewall of the excavation for the ecology block wall, the Contractor had exposed the soil contact between the buttress fill that had been placed during stabilization efforts in September 2019 and the native glacial till. According to measurements made by the Contractor, the approximate elevation of the contact with the glacial till was 265.5 ft. Because of limitations on the excavation geometry, it was anticipated that the proposed upper retaining wall would be founded on poorly compacted buttress fill and the Applicant's geotechnical engineer recommended that the proposed upper wall be founded on pin piles in order to transfer the wall load down to the competent glacial till. Based on the plans for the residence, prepared by CG Engineering, dated March 30, 2020, the proposed bottom of footing elevation for the upper wall is 266 ft. Based on observations made during excavation for the temporary basement retaining wall, the Applicant requested that he be allowed to lower the footing for the upper retaining wall by 6 inches in order to bear directly on the glacial till, thereby eliminating the need to install pin piles. It is my understanding that the proposed upper wall will be located approximately 32 ft west of the edge of the City roadway, which has an elevation of 284 ft at the highest point. Based on my observations and my understanding of the proposed improvements, constructing the upper wall with a bottom of footing elevation of 265.5 ft would require a temporary excavation slope of 1.5H:IV, and therefore is considered to be generally feasible without impacting the City Right of Way. The purpose of my site visit was to observe excavation conditions with respect to the stability of the City Right of Way and the permit submittal documents related to the proposed improvements at 15712 72nd Avenue West in Edmonds, Washington. No observations or recommendations were made pertaining to other aspects of the residential construction at the site. The geotechnical services provided by Landau Associates does not lessen the requirements for the Applicant's geotechnical consultant to serve as the project's Geotechnical Engineer of Record and other design professionals to prepare an appropriate design for the site conditions.
