S1.1 Masonry Specifications A34 @ EACH RAFTER 1. Concrete Masonry Units: 2. Mortar: ALL BLOCKS SHALL CONFORM TO ASTM C90, LATEST EDITI❑N, Mortar shall be proportioned as necessary to conform to the requirements of ACI 530.1-13, Table 22,32 for Type S mortar, 3. Grout: Grout compressive strength, when tested per ACI 530.1 shall equal or exceed the concrete masonry unit strength, psi, All grout additives shall receive the prior approval of the structural engineer and the building official, Cement content of the grout shall be increased, as necessary to achieve the specified masonry assemble strength (f'm=1500psi) and adequate workability, Grout slump to be in ranges of 8 in, to 11 in, 4. Admixtures: The use of admixtures shall not be permitted in mortar or grout unless sustaining data has been submitted to and approved by the engineer, (The use of uncontrolled fire, clay, dirt and other deleterious materials is prohibited) 5. Aggregates: Sand for mortar shall confirm to ASTM C144 except that not less than 3% of the sand shall pass the number 100 sieve, Sand and pea gravel for grout shall confirm to ASTM C404, Table 1, coarse aggregate, except when other gratings are specifically approved by the engineer, 0 6. Water: Water used for mortar and grout shall be clean and free from deleterious amounts of acids, salts, alkali and organic materials, 7. Mixing: Place the sand, cement and water in the mixer in that order for each batch of site mixed mortar or grout and mix for a period of at least 2 minutes, Add the lime and continue mixing for as long as needed to secure a uniform mass, but in no case less than 10 minutes, Retemper mortar only by adding water into the mortar and then carefully working the water into the mortar, Retempering the mortar by dashing water over the mortar shall not be permitted, Any mortar that is unused within 2 1/2 hours or grout that is unused 1 1/2 hours after initial mixing shall be removed from the work, 8. Required Strength: The Minimum ultimate compressive strength of the masonry wall assemblage at 28 days shall be 1500 psi, In addition to all others requirements, masonry constituents shall posses the required properties to achieve this required strength, 9. Reinforcement: Reinforcement steel shall conform to ASTM A615, Reinforcement shall be fully embedded in grout, See structural notes f or size, grade, laps, etc, Joint reinforcement shall conform to ASTM A951, 10. Preparation: Before block is placed on concrete, thoroughly clean concrete of all loose material, Roughen as in a concrete construction joint, 11. Laying: In placing mortar in head and bed joints, completely cover the thickness of the face shells of the units with mortar, Lay all masonry with common or running bond, When walls are ended temporary, the masonry units shall not project in alternate courses (toothing), unless approved by the engineer, All masonry shall be built to preserve the unobstructed vertical continuity of the cells to be filled. The vertical alignment shall be sufficient to maintain a clear, unobstructed vertical flue conforming to the requirements in ACI 530.1. 12. Reinforcement Placing: Place all horizontal bars in bond beam units, When 2 bars are used, stagger laps a minimum of 5'-0", Vertical reinforcement shall be held in position at top and bottom and at intervals not exceeding 200 bar diameters, Rebar positioners may be used to achieve this, Horizontal reinforcing shall be placed in bond beam units, except lintel units may be used over openings, 13. Imbedded Items: All embedded items (bolts, etc,) shall be secured in place prior to grouting, Provide a minimum of 1" grout around all bolts in masonry, 14. Grouting Preparation: Clean all cells and bond beams of excessive mortar protrusions and other debris before grouting, 15. Grout Pour: Maximum grout without cleanouts 5'-0" in block walls, If required cleanouts shall not be sealed before inspection, The thickness of grout between block and reinforcing steel shall not be Less than 1/2" and between parallel bars not lees than 1", 16. Grouting Wall: All cell shall be solidly filled with grout, 17. Grout Consolidation: All grout shall be consolidated by mechanical vibration using a 3/4" head low velocity vibrator for a few second immediately after placing, Reconsolidation by vibration must be done after the initial water loss and before initial set, Timing of reconsolidation is dependent on job site conditions (weather, masonry units, etc,), It may be 5 or 10 minutes, it must be less than an hour, 18. Construction Joint: When Grouting is stopped for a period of 1 hour or longer, from horizontal construction joints by stopping the grout pour 1-1/2 inches minimum below the uppermost unit, except at top of wall. 19. Wall Cleaning and Protection: Remove concrete scum and grout stains on the wall immediately, After the wall is constructed, do not saturate with water for curing or any other purpose, 20. Special Inspection: Working stress design has been performed for this project, Inspection program shall comply with TSM402/ACI530/ASCE5, Table 1.18.1.
