Some have visual effects involving point -of -view or perspective. Others invite a participants as a selfie backdrop. It is a form of public art that often conveys information and feeling to the viewer. In this mural proposal, I want to include these attributes and apply them to the idea of Edmonds as a welcoming community. I invite people to visually "read" the image. There are visual cues around the painting that allude to universal narratives: The father teaching his children, the traveler returning home, the matriarch watching over all. There are also historical narratives: The 2 oxen whose names were included as signatories to help Edmonds to register as a city, and the many cedar shake roofs that refer back to the shingle factories. I love narrative illustrations that ask the viewer to interpret the scene. If the visual cues are left "open" enough, then the viewer can provide their own reading and interpret their own story. As for design structure- the format is similar to a book's. I have been working with an author on a children's book these past years, and you can see the influence in the design. I also tried to make the horizon at eye level. This gives the subtle illusion that the viewer can walk through the wall from one world to another. This point of view also allows for a good backdrop for photos under the Edmonds banner. For a long time, I have been painting anthropomorphic animals. I became interested in animal behavior while pursuing a zoology degree. I hint at elements of the animals actual behavior in the character that I build. Also, I find the characters more relatable as animals. We are very sensitive to human faces, so I tend to avoid them in my work. I am honored to be a part of this project and make a contribution to the aesthetics of a historic and often visited city. Edmonds has a unique identity, and I want the mural to honor that community spirit. LOCATION The mural is located on the South-west face of the building, exposed to walking and street traffic from one direction. There is a blue awning that partially obscures this part of the building from a distance, but it can easily be seen from either sidewalk or the street as one approaches. The mural site is exposed to weather and sun for much of the day. The painting surface is currently weathered and will need preparation (Scraping loose paint) 4 A Map data ©2022, Map data ©2022 10 fl PROCESS To access the upper half of the mural, I will be renting a 10ft rolling scaffold. Because the ground is not level for the scaffold, I plan to lay sheets of thick plywood on the path and ground below the working area to keep the scaffold stable while working. The mural will be painted using cardboard stencils that I have already transferred from the drawing and cut at scale. I will use a mix of rollers and brushes to complete the rest once the major elements are blocked in. All materials will be stored in the building's storage room (provided by Jen Lawson), except for the scaffolding and plywood boards. The scaffolding will be locked to a fence using a lock and chain, tucked away down the alley and partially out of sight. As for paint brand, I plan to use Novacolor paint. The wall will be primed using a high quality, weather resistant primer.
