We visited the site today at the request of the owners, Mike and Sabine Norton, to evaluate foundation subgrade
for the garage addition located at the above address. Upon arrival we met with the Paul Stromme, the contractor,
to discuss the current project. We observed that the foundation area had been excavated down to subgrade levels.
Exposed soils consisted of undocumented fill underlain by light brown silty fine to course sand with gravel and
cobbles that we interpreted to be native glacial till soils at depth.
During our visit, we evaluated the foundation subgrade with a Y2 inch diameter steel probe rod under moderate
pressure. Probing yielded less than 1 inch which we interpreted to be medium dense or better conditions. Exposed
cuts ranged in height from 2.0 to 6.5 feet. We were informed that vertical cuts over 4.0 feet would be sloped back
the following day after a survey had been completed.
We have been providing geotechnical consultation and construction monitoring services on a part-time basis. Our
findings and conclusions are based on specific observations made while on site. In our opinion, the subgrade
evaluated today was prepared in accordance with the approved plans and our recommendations. We can return
to the site upon request to provide additional consultation.
