If the walls will end up retaining soil (or, if retaining soil on both sides of the wall the finish grade
elevation on one side is higher than at the other side of the wall and the difference in height is 4'
or higher) the wall is a retaining wall and needs to be constructed per my engineering details. I
provided two different wall details for this project, the top supported retaining wall, where the
concrete wall goes full height and is connected to the floor at the top, and supported by the floor
at the top per the connection detail, and also a detail for a stepped -down wall where the
concrete does not extend to the floor but stops at some point between the footing and the floor,
and has a concrete pony wall on top. This latter type is a cantilever retaining wall, does not
require connection of the concrete to the floor (since it does not reach that height) but it requires
a much larger, more heavily reinforced footing, detailed to keep the wall stable against
overturning and sliding.
The cross sections for the house for the locations circled in red appear to indicate concrete
walls going all the way to the floor and that will retain soil on the exterior of the basement. For
reference I am including the cross sections that I see on the version of the drawings called v6
that may be the latest or one of the latest.
