Installation Guidelines
1. For Systems des ' ig'ned r'n accordance with NFPA 13,
13D and 13R, where specific UL Listed flows -are. not
required, cons'ult with the local Authority Havibg
Jurl*sdiction regarding the number of - design sprinklers
for sloped ceilings having pitch greater than Y,2 (9.4').
2. Installation of UL listed residential sr)rinklers, under
sloped ceilings shall be limite'd10 a typ. e of
unobstructed construction consistina of flat smooth
r
cei'lings, as defined by NFPA 13, having a maximum
pitch of 4112 (1840) or 8/12 (33.7).
3. Where listed install hori*zontal sidewall sprinklers alon
the wall below the slor)ed ceHina when discharae
9
a
is
directed across e slope and install at- the peak below
the sloped ceiling when discharge j*s directed down the
slope. Always align the sprinkler deflector parallel with
the direction of the sloped ceiliong.
4. Residential HSW sprinklers located closedio the peak
of the ceiling shall have the defledtors loca'tedhot more
than 3 ft. (1m) vertically down from the peak.
A
5. Spacing of residential HSW sprinklers under. slop.ed
ceilings is measured along th'e s1ope'whe''n_'de'te'r . m ining
the distance off of walls and between sprinklers.
D. Measure listed areas of coverage along the sloped
ceiling. The actual floor coverage aroa will be less than
the listed area.
7b For coverage areas less than the listed mverag.e area
shown in Tables I through 6, use' thL:-% M'inimu'm' flow
requirement for next largest listed coverag- e- a.-rea.
_J
Minimum spacing between horizontal sidewall
sprinklers is 8 ft. (2.4 m). Minimum distance from a
horizontal sidewall sprinkler and an adjacent wall is 4
(102 mm).
Where installation of F1 Res 40 horizontal sidewall
sprinklers provide discharge across a slope having a
maximum pitch ot 8/12, F2 escutcheons may be used
for surface mounting only.
D. Hydraulic Requirements -
a. Fo r ' NFPA 13D Systems, the number of design
sprinklers shall include all sprinklers within a
compartment, u to a maxi -mum of two sprinklers
(whe ' re specific L Listed flows are required) that
requires the greatest hydraulic demana.
Excepfion: For F1 Res 40 horizontal sidewall
s n - nkler's, where discharge is directed across a
srope having a maximum pitch of 8/12 and the
compqrtment that requires the greatest hydraulic
demand is large enou h where three (3) or more
0 r
sprinklers are requi'redyor adequate coverag-e ' the
. 9 a
minimum number of desi'gn sprinklers within that
compartment shall be three (3), where specific UL
Listed flows are required.
b. For NFPA 13R Systems, the number of design
spr - inklers shall include all sprinklers within a
compartment, up to a maximum of four (4)
spM ' Hers (where specific UL Listed flows are
required), that requires the greatest hydraulic
demand.
c. For NFPA 13 systems, the design area shall be the
area that includes the four (4) hydraulically most
d andIng sprinklers. The minimum re uired
dischare from each of the four hydrauill'cally
demanciing sprinklers shall be the greater of the
following.-
(1) In accordance with the minimum flow rates
indicated by the, individual I.isfinps (that alrea'dy
'r 2,
will provide a minimum densi oi 0. 1 Q'PrrVft ),
(2) A calculated value base on d'61i'vering a
minimum of 0. 1 gpm/ft2 ov th design area.
I I Because of the varied nature of residential construction
features, there will be some compartment designs
which cannot be fully sprinklered in accordance with
NFPA 13, 13D, or 13R. In these instances, consult the
Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for guidance and
approval. This includes sloped ceilings having a pitch
greater than 8/12 (33.70).
12. Glass bulb sprinklers have orange bulb protectors to
minimize bulb damage during shipping, handling and
installation. REMOVE THIS PROTECTION AT THE TIME
THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM IS PLACE IN SERVICE FOR
FIRE PROTECTION. Removal of the protectors before
thi's time may leave the bulb vulnerable to damage.
RASCO wrenches are designed to install sprinklers
when covers are in place. REMOVE PROTECTORS BY
UNDOING I HE CLASP BY HAND. DO NOT USE
TOOLS TO REMOVE THE PROTECTORS.
equipment presented in this ' bulletin is to be Install.ed in accordance with the latest Pertinent Standards of the National Fire Pfolection Association, Factory Mutual Research
:>oration, or othef sim-11ar organizations and also wfth the provisions of governmental codes or ordinances, whenever applicable.
