During our visit, weather consisted of clear skies with temperatures in the low 70s F. Retaining Wall Subgrade Observations: While onsite, we observed the contractor had excavated an approximately 5 feet wide by 3.5 feet deep by 70 feet long keyway for the proposed retaining wall. We observed excavated soils had been hauled off site. We observed the proposed retaining wall's subgrade soils to consist of brownish gray gravelly sand and poorly graded sand, consistent with our subsurface investigation. We used a 1/2" diameter T-probe to probe the retaining wall's subgrade and observed firm, dense, and unyielding conditions in areas probed, considered suitable for supporting the proposed retaining wall for the northern approximately 65 feet of the keyway. We observed loose soils near the southern extent of the keyway (near an abandoned sewer pipe), and recommend that the area be over -excavated an additional I foot, and backfilled with clean crushed rock (minimum 5/8", maximum 1 1/4" clast size). Retaining Wall Cut Slope Observations: We observed the over -steepened cut slope behind the proposed retaining wall consisted of an approximately 4 to 6 feet tall near vertical cut and was sloped at an approximately 1 H:1 V inclination above the vertical cut. We observed the sloped area was undisturbed, and vegetated with ivy groundcover and bushes. We did not observe any evidence of slope instability or sloughing during our site vist.
