Memorandum Client: Client Address: Contractor: Project: Project Number: Johnston Architects 3131 Western Avenue, Suite 510 Seattle, WA 98121 Faber Construction Sno-Isle Edmonds Library Nanawall 00484-2023-04 Swenson Say Faget STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING 206.443.6212 + ssfengineers.com Date: From: SEATTLE 2124 Third Avenue, Suite 100 Seattle, WA 98121 TACOMA 934 Broadway, Suite 100 Tacoma, WA 98402 CENTRAL WASHINGTON 414 N Pearl Street, Suite 8 Ellensburg, WA 98926 November 16, 2023 Lori DeBoer, PE, SE We are writing this memorandum to provide our recommendations related to the installation of new anchorage at the underside of the existing precast concrete spandeck at the plaza/second floor structure for the highlighted locations shown in the sketch on the second page of this memorandum. This sketch with the highlighted locations was provided to us by the architect on 11/16/2023. From the existing 1981 structural drawings, it is our understanding that the existing spandeck structure is 12-inch thick. However, the existing drawings do not specify the reinforcement for the spandeck, and no other additional information or drawings related to the detailing of the existing spandeck was made available to us. Based upon in -field scanning completed by the contractor at a few select locations, it was determined that the existing spandeck is likely reinforced with bonded tendons at web locations. For any anchorage installation into the underside of the existing spandeck, no reinforcement (including the tendons) should be interrupted or damaged. Since we do not have existing drawings that specify the clear cover to the existing reinforcement, we have assumed 3/4" minimum clearance based upon current code provisions. Based on this assumption, we recommend all anchorage into the underside of the existing spandeck is less than 3/4" in depth. This is an assumption only and is not a guarantee of the as -built clear cover at any location. It is the contractor's responsibility to verify the as - built clear cover to the existing reinforcement to avoid any interruption or damage to existing reinforcement. Larger embedments exceeding 3/4" may be able to be achieved at some areas by locating existing panel edges, webs, and reinforcement (including tendons). We recommend that the contractor locates the existing spandeck web and tendons and avoid any attachment at these locations. It is the contractor's responsibility to locate existing reinforcement prior to installation of anchorage to avoid any interruption or damage to existing reinforcement.
