Project: Clint Jewelers New Store Tenant Improvement
100 5' Ave N
Edmonds, WA 98020
Subject: Engineering Justifications and Calculations for the Storefront Canopy and Awning
Cc: Andy Cline, Business Owner
Curtis McGuire, Project Architect
To Whom It May Concern:
DHS Engineers, PLLC has been retained by Cline Family to assist on various structural engineering tasks
associated with the above -reference project. This memo is to provide necessary justifications via
engineering calculations for the new store front canopy and the expanded existing awning system on each
side of the canopy.
The Store Front Canopy and Its Supporting System
The store front canopy itself is a design -built item provided by the project General Contractor's supplier
that is engineered by others. The canopy itself is constructed with aluminum. The supplier was informed
that proper isolations between the aluminum and steel should take place between the canopy and the
supporting system DHS engineered on the building side to receive it. We were assured that the supplier is
aware and is very familiar with these types of conditions on all the projects they have been involved.
DHS was provided the following design information for the canopy including a store signage that will be
attached on the front of the canopy:
1. The canopy is 6ft deep and 1 Oft wide,
2. The canopy weighs 250 pounds.
3. The store signage weighs between 75 to 100 pounds.
The design snow load is 25 psf and snow drift is not anticipated if 25 psf full snow load is used for the
design. The loading information is shown in the attached canopy detail in blue. Based on the above
loading information, the reaction forces can be calculated and are shown in the attached canopy detail
with red arrows. These reaction forces are then resolved via capacities provided by various structural
components that are part of the framing detail shown in red/yellow clouds. The minimum required

capacities are shown in dashed red arrows. It is obvious that more than adequate capacities were provided
based on the attached product data.
Awning and Its Supporting System
The existing awning framing on the west has been reused after the canvas is reskinned and then
reinstalled per the updated attached detail. The identical framing has been used for the new section on the
south. The previously city approved shop drawings are attached. The code defined the loads have not
changed since the last installation in early 2011 on the same building including the wind force.
