Eric,
See the attached PDF of the ICC approved ESL that indicates 43mils dry film thickness yields a 2-hour
rating for an exterior wall that only has 1-hour protection from dryrwall.
The ESL shows a 2-hour rated exterior wall assembly, but as we are looking for an applied thickness to
achieve the needed 1-hour it is sufficient. There are no ESLs for a floor/ceiling assembly but that's likely
due to the fact they are testing the fire -resistance of the paint and not the assembly.
At least (3) coats will be required per the manufacturer's specification previously provided as they
indicate 13.5 to 16.2 mils per coat dry. Thanks,

Hi Jesse,
I am reviewing the submittal and had a question and figured it was best to go straight to the source, I
hope you don't mind.
The paint specs provide a mil thickness per coat, but I don't how many mils or coats it will take to
provide the one hour necessary. Any info you can provide? Did I miss something? To help expedite their
permit I can add your response to the permit.
Thanks for your help.

Nils/Eric,
Attached is the specification PDF from the intumescent paint that you can get at Home Depot. There are
other paints available so if they meet ASTM 2768/ASTM E-84 and ASTM E-119, UL 263, or NFPA 251 they
are acceptable.
The rating is 1-hour for floor/ceiling assemblies, which when applied over the (3) layers of 5/8" type 'X'
(base direct and then (2) over REC) which provides at leat a 1 hour rating, the total assembly provides a
minimum 2-hour fire -rated assembly.
Thanks,
