Arborist report for Tru Scape Design/Morgan Majerus, 18303 84th PI W Edmonds, Wa.
November 22, 2022. 12 PM.
Thank you for having me out to assess the condition of the trees on the site. Prior to the site visit
I was provided a site map for this address, although it appears as though some of the significant
tree systems in the eastern portion of this site may not have been represented. During the site
visit, I walked the address alone and was able to assign DSH readings and critical zone radii to
many of the significant tree systems that are close to the existing structures on the site. My
comments about how any proposed improvements to this site will affect the existing tree systems
are pending more information.
It does appear to me as though the eastern portion of this sites contains a critical slope. There is a
very steep drop-off to the east and there are quite a few significant tree systems, as well as a
blanket of English Ivy at the ground level, that are likely doing quite a bit of work to hold this
hillside place. On critical slopes, typically all significant tree systems over 6 inches in diameter
are protected because of the work that they are doing to assist with erosion. Usually, they can
only be removed if they are posing a threat to a targets or if there is a building a project and plans
to stabilize the hillside in place.
On the day of the site visit the weather was poor and accessing the bases of the tree systems on
the steep hillside was not possible. It is also likely the case that the systems will not be affected
by the proposed improvements to this site. For the purposes of building this report, I am
concentrating on the tree systems at the crest of the slope and close to the existing structures.
Tree 1 There is a Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) that is to the south of the existing primary
residence on this site. It appears to be a common variety known as Bloodgood and because the
tree has several stems that originate at approximately knee height, I took the DSH reading at the
narrowest portion of the trunk above the roof layer and obtained a reading of 13 inches. This tree
is up against the house and has a drip line that extends a 20 foot to the south, to the east, and to
the west. The tree has a drip line of approximately 10 foot that arcs over the roof of the existing
structure. This tree is in excellent condition. The existing driveway to the east of the tree is in
nice condition and it is likely that the tree has roots under beneath the cement pour.
Tree 2 Moving toward the southeast corner of the lot, there are quite a few trees that are at the
crest of the hill. The southernmost tree is a Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga mensiezii) that swoops out
of the bank and which was topped approximately 50 foot above grade. This tree has an
approximate diameter at standard height reading of 23 inches and a drip line radius of
approximately 20 foot. This is a topped tree.
Tree 3 Moving to the north, there is another Douglas Fir with an approximate diameter at
standard height reading of 6 inches. This system was topped approximately 12 foot above grade.

Tree 4 Moving to the north, the next system is a Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) with an
approximate diameter at standard height reading of 17 inches. Also topped approximately 18 foot
above grade, which has resulted in unnatural structure. The drip line radius for this specimen is
16 feet.
Tree 5 Moving further north there is a European White Birch (Betula pendula) with a diameter at
standard height reading of 6 inches. Topped at approximately 8 foot above grade. The tree has
unnatural structure.
Tree 6 Moving north there is a Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga mensiezii) system with a diameter at
standard height reading of 20 inches. This tree was topped approximately 30 foot above grade
and there is evidence of breakage in the upper canopy of the system.
Tree 7 Moving further to the west, there is a Douglas fir with a diameter that standard height of
approximately 10 inches. This tree appears to have excurrent structure.
There are quite a few systems on the slope to the east of the aforementioned Douglas fir. There
are Big Leaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) systems as well as another Douglas fir. Because of the
height reduction, many of the systems are showing some signs of weakness and defects in the
upper canopies. Because of the lack of targets in this region, none of the trees can be considered
hazardous.
Tree 9 There was a Fig growing fairly close to the southeast corner of the primary structure of
my client's site. When I arrived for the site visit, I found that the tree had been recently coppiced.
The nature of the species is to recover with a lot of vigor and I expect this system to produce
quite a few adventitious shoots in the spring.
Most of the plants that are growing just east of the primary structure on the site are multi -
stemmed Pontic Rhododendrons. While they are represented by individual circles on the site map
that I was provided, this amalgamation of shrubs is functioning at this time like one large plant.
Most likely it was originally planted as seven or eight individual systems.
Tree 10 On the west side of the house, there is evidence of a Vine Maple (Acer circinatum)
having been recently removed. The debris from the removal was piled up during the site visit and
the tree would've had a DSH reading of between 12 and 9 inches based upon my assessment of
the root flare.
I will be compiling this information, photographs, and adding some information to the site map
that the client provided to me. How to advise the client to proceed with this project is pending
more details.
