Removal of Basement Shearwall
Dear Mr. Hromada:
The existing structural drawings show the interior wall at the basement level,
proposed to be removed, is a wood shearwall SW-2 (see below snapshot of the
existing drawings). The drawings also show that there is no shearwall at the main
level above.
It is our opinion that this shearwall is not necessary since we have full height
concrete walls along the east side of the house which would provide much higher
capacity and stiffness to resist any lateral loads, compared to any wood shearwalls.
In addition, based on your site visit check today (September 6 2023), you have
confirmed there is no shearwall at this location at the basement level since there is
no OSB or plywood sheathing on either sides of the wall studs.
