4. Grants Update
a. Pam updated the group on the Hazel Miller Foundation grant applications. Both
grants were not selected. Last month, the Mayor and Director McLaughlin had
discussed that neither grant would be signed if awarded due to staff resources.
b. Steve shared that the Sierra Club sea -level program along with Greg Ferguson are
interested in creating a 2-D sea level film. Cynthia and Dawna supported a 2-D sea
level rise simulation. Steve supports the 3-D project because of its positive impact in
other coastal cities. Pam agreed we should defer the decision.
c. Steve asked Susan if we could get feedback from Hazel Miller on our grant
application. She will investigate.
5. Climate Action Week Update — Replanning
a. Pam asked that we go around the room and get each members input as to what a
Climate Action Week could be without any funding. Assume everything is off the
table.
b. Niall has lined up three groups as potential speakers. He feels we should still pursue
speakers. Niall also believes we can have a scaled down launch event with SnoPud
and Sierra Club manning booths.
c. Niall recommended we use our news media to promote.
d. Gayla has already announced a climate change musical event with Nelda Swiggett
that can be part of the CAW.
e. David shared that the committee is advisory in nature and that is why he joined;
public outreach is not his thing.
f. Dawna passed.
g. Pam shared that the speaker series sounded great especially if we could get the
Children's Trust. (Later David shared he knows the communications director for CT).
h. Pam also shared that the mayor was very supportive of an EV rally if we could pull
that off. Discussion ensued regarding the Classic Car Show and getting dealers to
bring in their EVs.
i. Cynthia shared that she enjoys the community outreach events and feels they are
important. She also said that our role is to "advise the mayor". We need to comment
on the sustainability chapter in the comprehensive plan. There was discussion on
whether a draft is available or not. Notice of community meetings were given but the
CPC needs to have an ability to review the draft and provide comment and feedback
to the mayor.
j. Bill asked about what we plan to do with the August 3rd Farmers Market booth. We
do not have brochures or a sign. Thom said he has giveaways, like water saving
devices we can hand out. Pam volunteered to draft a potential sign (4' x4') and a
handout as to what actions the community can take to reduce climate change
impact.
k. We need to be settled by July 11t" as to what the farmers market booth will have to
work with.
