Bus Stop Signs
A bus stop is a curbside area specially designated for passenger loading and unloading. It
is commonly identified by a bus stop sign, and a yellow curb marking or a tow away zone
sign. Stops are usually implemented in pairs, one for each direction of travel, to facilitate
beginning and ending of a passenger trip at that location.
Flag Mounting Standards
Signs will be mounted on a Community Transit pole, so that sign's lower edge is seven
feet from the ground, and at least two feet from the edge of curb or travel lane. Each pole
will have reflective tape to improve night visibility. The reflective tape will be 1.5
"width x 12" lengths on the approach side of post, starting bottom edge of tape 12" from
above ground. Generally, the bus stop sign would be mounted independently of other
signage on its own pole with a Bus Schedule Holder, or if appropriate, on existing light
standards. The exact location, mounting and material is usually determined by a joint
agreement between Community 'Transit and the appropriate jurisdiction.

(4),,t,,accment Criteria
8 it When the pole is mounted on a shelter pad, constructed in back of the sidewalk, the
Opole shall be mounted on the farside of the ad at the edge of the ad closest to the
p g P
3YZ rp ek street with the flag facing toward the street.
2. When the pole is mounted on a shelter pad, constructed in front of the sidewalk
(adjacent to the curb), and the pole shall be mounted on the farside of the pad, 4 feet
away from the curb with the flag facing toward the street.
In rural areas where there are no curbs and the bus zone is an in -lane stop, the pole
should be installed at the head of the zone with a lateral clearance normally not closer
than 10 feet from the edge of the road with the flag facing toward the street.
4. At out -of -lane stops on shoulders without curbs, the pole should be installed not
closer than 30 feet from the road edge, at the head of the zone, with the flag facing
toward the street.
Normally, signs should be mounted approximately at right angles to the direction of, and
facing the traffic that they are intended to serve. At curved alignments, the angle of
placement should be determined by the course of approaching traffic rather than by the
roadway edge at the point where the sign is located. Bus stop signs will be located to
maintain a five foot pathway clearance (six foot desirable) for pedestrians.
Post
If a sleeve is needed for installation the sleeve must be 24" long. Dig a hole 22" down,
installed the sleeve on a bus stop pole and put in hole. Use at least v2 orconcrete in
the hole. Use a level to make sure the pole is straight. Posts at bus shelters will be
installed at the head of the zone.
Flags
The flag will be mounted on the bus stop pole with the bottom of the sign 7' from the
ground. The flag will face the street when the pole is mounted on the backside of a
sidewalk. The flag will face the sidewalk when the pole is mounted 2 feet back from the
street. There may be exceptions to the above due to trees, brush and other signs.
Numbers
The numbers will be placed on the sign 1" in from the edge of the sign. The numbers
will be listed in columns starting on the left side of the sign. There will be '/2" space
between sets of numbers in a column. If there are two columns of numbers on a sign
there will be a 2" space between columns.
The number font will change to an updated Windows font when the Marketing
Department buys new signs.
Bus Stop Sign (Flag) Standards
The standard bus stop sign, or bus stop flag, is used to indicate the location of a bus zone.
The sign is a 16 '/z x 36" 0.080 gauge aluminum plate with a 11/2 radius rounded corners.
Route numbers are 13/4" in height. Numbers are left margin justified in consecutive order
from top to bottom, 2 7/8" from baseline to baseline.
