The benchmark for fire alarm systems has changed to give designers, engineers, contractors, installers, and inspectors rules that reflect the current state of the field. An industry milestone, the 2010 edition of NFPA 72: National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, opened the doors for cellular communicators to be used as single communication path for commercial fire applications. Since then, there have been various additions and amendments to the NFPA 72 code that reinforce the use of this single communication technology as a supervised option over standard dual POTS lines, as well as minor adjustments that impact the use of multiple technologies. Each edition of the code contains numerous code updates related to the application, installation, location, performance, inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire alarm systems. The TG-7FS is the first offering from Telguard for the Commercial Fire industry. Since its inception, the TG-7FS has been used as a secondary communication path in commercial fire installations, however, with the release of the 2010 edition of the code, the TG-7FS has also met all the requirements to be classified as a viable Sole Path communication alternative to dual phone lines. Through the different editions, requirements have changed with favorable revisions of the sole -path clauses and enhancements to multi -path requirements, which over the years have allowed for an effective and economical supervision rate for cellular installations. As code continues to evolve and expand its reach to oversee new technologies, so has the line up of Telguard communicators for commercial fire applications. While the TG-7FS (Sole path or Back up) remains as one of the top communicators in the industry, Telguard has introduced other products such as the TG-7UB (Upgrade board), the TG-7FP (Sole Path only), and the TG-7FE (Dual Path with Internet), that also meet the same requirements but are suited for slightly different fire installations. Below are the historical changes to NFPA 72 code that apply to the entire line of Commercial Fire communicators from Telguard and their ability to be used as Sole Path, Back up or Dual path means of communications: NFPA72 Rev Code Section 2010 "26.6.3.1.4.1 Single Communications Technology. Where only one communication technology is used, any failure of the communications path shall be annunciated at the supervising station within 5 minutes of failure." "26.6.3.1.4.2 Multiple Communications Technology. Where two or more different technologies are used, the following requirements shall be met: (1) Provision shall be made to monitor the integrity of each communications path. (2) Failure of any communications path shall be annunciated at the supervising station and at the protected premises within not more than 24 hours of the failure." 2013 "26.6.3.1.5 Single Communications Path. Unless prohibited by the enforcing authority, governing laws, codes, or standards, a single transmission path shall be permitted, and the path shall be supervised at an interval of not more than 60 minutes. A failure of the path shall be annunciated at the supervising station within not more than 60 minutes. The failure to complete a signal transmission shall be annunciated at the protected premises in accordance with Section 10.15." "26.6.3.1.6 Multiple Communications Paths. If multiple transmission paths are used, the following requirements shall be met: (1) Each path shall be supervised within not more than 6 hours. (2) The failure of any path of a multipath system shall be annunciated at the supervising station within not more than 6 hours. (3) The failure to complete a signal transmission shall be annunciated at the protected premises in accordance with Section 10.15." 2016 "26.6.3.3 Single Communications Path. Unless prohibited by the enforcing authority, governing laws, codes, or standards, a single transmission path shall be permitted, and the path shall be supervised at an interval of not more than 60 minutes. A failure of the path shall be annunciated at the supervising station within not more than 60 minutes. The failure to complete a signal transmission shall be annunciated at the protected premises in accordance with Section 10.14." "26.6.3.4 Multiple Communications Paths. If multiple transmission paths are used, the following requirements shall be met: (1) Each path shall be supervised within not more than 6 hours. (2) The failure of any path of a multipath system shall be annunciated at the supervising station within not more than 6 hours. (3) Multiple communications paths shall be arranged so that a single point of failure shall not cause more than a single path to fail. (4) The failure to complete a signal transmission shall be annunciated at the protected premises in accordance with Section 10.14." 2019 "26.6.3.3 Single Communications Path. Unless prohibited by the enforcing authority, governing laws, codes, or standards, where a single communications path is used, the following requirements shall be met: (1) The path shall be supervised at an interval of not more than 60 minutes. (2) A failure of the path shall be annunciated at the supervising station within not more than 60 minutes. (3) The failure to complete a signal transmission shall be annunciated at the protected premises in accordance to section 10.15." "26.6.3.4 Multiple Communications Paths. If multiple transmission paths are used, the following requirements shall be met: (1) Each path shall be supervised within not more than 6 hours. (2) The failure of any path of a multipath system shall be annunciated at the supervising station within not more than 6 hours. The Telguard commercial fire communicators are compliant with the aforementioned code by virtue of two features: • In Sole Path mode, the communicators can be programmed to use a 5-minute or a 60-minute supervision feature that will alert the supervising station of a failure of the supervised path. • When working as a secondary path to a separate connection/device, the communicators can be programmed to do 24-hour or 6-hour self -tests to the supervising station. • In Dual Path mode, the communicators can be programmed to do 24-hour or 6-hour self -tests to the supervising station via their connected ethernet and cellular path, satisfying the multi -path requirement without needing a Telco connection. The entire Telguard line of Commercial Fire Cellular Alarm Communicators (AT&T and Verizon models) which includes the TG-7FS, TG-7UB, TG-7FP, and TG-7FE, have been subjected to stringent tests by UL following the UL 864 test suite Standard for Control Units and Accessories for Fire Alarm Systems and ULC S559 Standard for Equipment for fire signal receiving centres and systems.
