The contractor removed the portion of each beam with dry rot and installed new beams without an engineering consultation. As a result, the cantilevered beam was removed and replaced back to the exterior wall and the deck beam was cut out and lapped mid -span. Based on the new configuration, a column is required at the exterior deck because the cantilevered beam cannot be replaced as is extends approximately 14' into the building. The deck beam lapped mid -span will be repaired to support the deck in conformance with the 2021 IBC. Please refer to the attached calculations and revised drawings that illustrate the structural requirements for the deck to be completed as it exists in the current state of construction. A new column will be added between the first and second floors to support both beams. The cantilevered beam will become a simple span beam and the deck beam splice will be supplemented with screws and a tension strap for structural integrity. Once the repairs shown in the structural drawings are implemented, the deck support will conform with the requirements of the 2021 IBC.
