Meeting Notes
April 7, 2016
The Edmonds Citizens' Tree Board Meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Vice Chair Jed
Marshall in the council chambers' Jury Room, 250 5`" Avenue North, Edmonds, WA.

1. CALL TO ORDER
Vice Chair Marshall called the meeting to order at 6:00.
2. ROLL CALL/INTRODUCTIONS
Vivian Olson, new Tree Board member was introduced
3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
All approved
4. AUDIENCE COMMENTS
There were no guests
5. APPROVAL OF MEETING NOTES
February and March meeting notes were approved as corrected.
6. OLD BUSINESS
2016 events calendar
a. Barb Durr discussed the May 5 event with Cass Turnbull. The motion to give $200 as
a speaker's fee was approved. Logistics for the Cass Turnbull presentation were
discussed. There will be refreshments. Doug Petersen volunteered to get coffee.
Most likely prewrapped snacks will be served. About 400 publicity flyers have been
distributed. Sandy Chase will be sending out a press release.
b. Local media will be contacted within the next week. My Edmonds News will send a
person to cover the event. We will make sure that the 2016 work plan/events will be
publicized.
c. Educational articles on urban trees will continue. An article about magnolias was
done in March. Barb Chase will have an article on Leyland Cypress and its problems
and better choices in April. Doug Petersen will be working on an article about the
tree canopy and its importance.
d. Tree Board presentation on 2015 and 2016 plans will take place at the City Council
on Tuesday April 12 at about 7:10 pm. It will be a 12-15 minute presentation. Steve
Hatzenbeler will talk about 2015 and ideas for improving the board's function. He will
talk about budget and staff involvement. He will have other suggestions for improving
the Tree Board and its work. Barb Chase will talk about the 2016 work plan and
events. Steve will introduce the Tree board members.
Barb Chase suggested the October 2015 project to plant natives on the sewer and
water pipe right of way at 8th and Daley be included in the 2015 report.
7. NEW BUSINESS
a. Doug Petersen and Barbara Durr reported on the meeting with Micki McNaughton
who is with the State of Washington Department of Natural Resources. Steve
Hatzenbeler, Barbara, and Doug were pleased with the information. One resource is
an online course from the Tree Board University.
b. Tree projects - Edmonds School District Barbara Durr had met with the facilities
person from the Edmonds School District. She is waiting for further contact.
c. Rescheduling May Tree Board meeting. The Cass Turnbull talk will be on the
regular Tree Board meeting date. We decided to meet on Thursday, April 28
instead.
d. Barbara Chase will send the name and phone numbers of our new members to
Sandy Chase so the Tree Board list is updated
8. TREE BOARD MEMBERS COMMENTS
Diane Buckshnis, City Council liaison, commented on importance of communicating our
Tree board actions with the City Council.
Barbara Chase shared the Seattle publication A City Among the Trees — an Urban
Forestry Resource Guide.
