Resolution 569PLANNING COM14ISSION
RESOLUTION NO. 569
A RESOLUTION TO THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EDMONDS RECOMMENDING
DENIAL OF A PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO THE ZONING CODE TO PERMIT A CERTAIN
PERCENTAGE OF THE PARKING SPACES IN RM DEVELOPMENTS TO BE COMPACT
SIZE (FILE #ZO-6-77)
WHEREAS, the Planning Commission of the City of Edmonds,
pursuant to proper notice and publication, held a public hearing
on a proposal to amend the Zoning Code to permit a certain percentage
of the parking spaces in RM developments to be compact size; and
WHEREAS, the present trend in the United States toward the
use of smaller cars may not continue, due to larger vehicles required
to use alternative fuels, making small car parking spaces
quickly obsolete; and
WHEREAS, smaller car spaces may create traffic safety
problems when people attempt to park large cars in small spaces; and
WHEREAS, a lack of sufficient standard size parking spaces
due to installation of smaller spaces may result in cars being
parked on the streets rather than in parking lots; and
WHEREAS, the benefit to the City in terms of a decrease in
impervious surfaces, and preservation of trees do not outweigh the
disadvantages of the proposal; NOW THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED that the Planning Commission recommends
and forwards to the City Council of said City, that the proposed
amendment to the Zoning Code, as set forth in Exhibit "A" attached
hereto, be denied.
