Report
Chy Ross — Managing Librarian
Highlights
Each winter we provide a series of events for children and families during the holiday school break,
our Winter Extravaganza. This provides a selection of enriching, fun, free and local events for families
during the time away from school. This year we had 4 programs, with an average of more than 60
people attending.
A couple of small projects in our children's area has that part of the library looking a little refreshed.
We added shelving for children's media — DVDs, music CDs and audio books. This provides a more
attractive, browsing -friendly display and allows us to hold more of these collections. Also, thanks to
the support of the Friends of the Edmonds Library, we were able to have the red wooden children's
chairs repainted, and they look great.
As of January 2, we have instituted a change in our DVD movie loan policy. Feature film DVDs now
circulate for 1 week rather than the previous 3 weeks. Television series and all children's and
educational DVDs remain at a 3-week checkout. We expect this change will make the lines and wait
times for popular movies much shorter. It should also free up resources currently being used to add
multiple copies of popular movies, which will allow us to add more variety to our DVD collection. Keep
in mind that movies can be renewed, so as long as there is not a waiting list you can renew and keep
movies longer than the 1 week if needed.
Programs and Services
Storytimes are running along on their full routine schedule. Every Tuesday at 10:30am is Preschool
Storytime; every Wednesday at 10:00am is a Baby Storytime focused in "walkers" and at 11:00am a
Baby Storytime focused on "pre -walkers"; and every Friday at 10:00am and again at 11:00am is a
Toddler Storytime. These remain a popular and valued library activity for our community. So far in
2015 we have averaged 32 in attendance at the Baby sessions, 50 for Toddlers and 35 for Preschool.
The very popular Tax Aide service, where trained AARP volunteers provide community members with
free assistance on their federal tax returns, began this month and continues through April 14. Every
Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday the volunteers are here helping people get those returns filed. Those
interested in taking advantage of the service need to stop in the library to make an appointment and
pick up the intake forms.
