NET The Leren Company, Inc. PO Box 12863 Mill Creek, WA 98082 Subject: Soils Assessment for Proposed Infiltration Trench Potts Residence 10509 2401h Place SW Edmonds, Washington Mr. Leren: October 2, 2013 Project #13069 KEET FILE RESUB OCT 0 3 2013 BUILDING EPDMONDSNT The purpose of this letter is to summarize our assessment of the soils observed in the proposed location of the future infiltration trench. Based on our phone discussion, e-mail correspondence, and a review of the site plan, it is our understanding that you intend to construct an infiltration trench in order to infiltrate runoff from 2,276 square feet of new impervious surface area associated with the construction of the new detached garage. The following sections of this letter document our observations and conclusions. Site Description The property was located at 10509 2401h Place SW in Edmonds, Washington. According to the site plan, the property was 11,602 square feet in size. There was an existing single family residence on the property, with associated landscaping and grading for the driveway and yard areas. The property was generally flat and we estimate that the there was less than 6 feet of total relief on the property. The property was bordered by residential properties to the east and west, by 2401h Place SW to the south, and an alley to the north. It is our understanding that 2,276 square feet of new impervious surface area will be created in the construction of the new garage and associated driveway and walkway. Runoff from these areas will be infiltrated into an infiltration trench. The proposed location of the infiltration trench is shown on the Site and Exploration Plan. Subsurface Conditions Subsurface conditions on the property were inferred from a visual reconnaissance of the property, a review of the referenced geologic map (Minard, 1983), and two hand auger borings. The hand auger explorations were logged by the undersigned licensed engineering geologist. The location of the 1 SOUTH FORK GEOSCIENCES, PO Box 1275, NORTH BEND, WA 98045, (425) 831-2023 hand auger borings are shown in the attached Site and Exploration Plan and the logs are attached to this report. Our interpretation of the near surface, native sediments as Vashon advance outwash sediments is in agreement with the referenced geologic map. Stratigraphy Fill Soil Fill soils were encountered at the ground surface to a depth of 1.25 feet in H13-1 and to a depth of 0.75 feet in 1-113-2. Since the proposed infiltration trench will be excavated a minimum of 3 feet below the existing grade, the fill soils on site will not impact the proposed infiltration trench. Vashon Advance Outwash - Qva Sediments interpreted to be Vashon advance outwash sediments were encountered in both hand auger exploration from the base of the fill soil to total depth of each hand auger boring. These sediments consisted of loose to medium dense, dry to damp, fine to coarse SAND with gravel and varying silt (SW to SW-SM). Vashon advance outwash sediments were deposited by meltwater streams in front of the advancing Vashon glacial ice and they. were subsequently overridden by the'glacial ice. Vashon advance outwash sediments are typically medium dense to dense due to consolidation by the weight of the glacial ice. Due to their grain size distribution, Vashon advance outwash sediments are relatively permeable and are typically well suited for infiltration purposes. Hydrology There was no groundwater seepage observed or signs of past high groundwater table such as mottling or oxidation observed in the two hand auger borings: The Vashon advance outwash sediments underlying the fill soils were dry to damp. Though the hand auger borings were terminated at 2.5 and 3 feet due to encountering cobbles, based on the geologic setting and the dry to damp native soils observed, the likelihood of groundwater at less than 4 feet below the ground surface is extremely low. Soil Conservation Service (SCS) Classification The site is mapped as Everett Gravelly Sandy Loam 0 to 8 percent which derive from Vashon advance outwash parent material. Our geologic interpretation and field observations are in agreement with the SCS classification. USDA Soil Textural Classification During the hand auger exploration, we obtained representative samples of the Vashon advance outwash sediments for laboratory testing. The results of the grain size analyses are attached to this report. After normalizing the percentages for the material passing the #10 sieve (fine gravel/coarse sand threshold), both samples tested have a USDA Soil Texture Triangle classification of loamy sand. 2 SOUTH FORK GEOSCIENCES, PO Box 1275, NORTH BEND, WA 98045, (425) 831-2023 Long Term Infiltration Rate Table C-1 in Appendix C of the referenced City of Edmonds stormwater code supplement provides recommended infiltration rates based on USDA soil textural classification. According to Table C-1, for loamy sand receptor soils, an estimated design (long-term) infiltration rate of 0.5 inches per hour may be used for infiltration trench and drywell design. Conclusions Based on our subsurface exploration, it is our opinion that the native soils in the location of the proposed infiltration trench are well suited for stormwater infiltration, as we have described in detail in the above sections of this letter. Based on the site plan we were provided, the proposed trench was sized based on a rate of 0.25 inches per hour. Based on our laboratory testing and review of the referenced City of Edmonds code supplement, for loamy sands a long-term design infiltration rate of.0.5 inches per hour may be used for design. As such, the infiltration trench may be appropriately re -sized. Our findings and recommendations provided in this letter were prepared in accordance with generally accepted principles of engineering geology as practiced in the Puget Sound area at the time this report was submitted. We make no other warranty, either expressed or implied. Our observations, findings, and opinions are a means to identify and reduce the inherent risks to the owner. We have enjoyed working with you on this project and are confident that the information provided in this letter will aid in the design of your project.
