For our use in preparing this letter, Mr. Thomas provided us with plans titled "Jim and Marilyn. Wegner - 17907 Kairez Drive, Edmonds, Washington," prepared by Architectural Design ► Associates, Inc.,"dated August 10, 2005. The plans included sheets. SP -1, GP -1, A-2 through A-9, S-1, and ca f S-2. We. were also provided with a Plan' Review Comments Letter from the City of Edmonds dated June 3, 2005. Mr. Thomas requested that we review the geotechnical aspects of the provided plans, and prepare this rn letter documenting our opinions regarding plan compliance with our previous report and memorandum. We reviewed the provided plans as well as our previous report. We found that the plans are in general i• compliance with the recommendations provided in the report. The interior and garage slab -on -grade rn. areas of the new residence had been backfilled and we observed the workers completing the final grading of the landscaping and planter areas outside of the building envelope. wrn Interior Slab Subgrade e o rn We observed that the workers had placed up to 3 feet of backfill behind the southern and eastern garage .4 O walls and northeastern walls of the new residence. The backfilled area was approximately 6 to 12 feet c wide (see site plan). We observed that the workers had also placed up to 8 inches of fill over the rest of z } the interior slab -on -grade areas to final subgrade elevation and covered most of the fill with an p approximately 4 -inch layer of pea gravel: The earthwork contractors informed us that they had eD z compacted the fill in 8- to 12 -inch lifts using a jumping jack. r i The fill could generaily be penetrated 1 to 4 inches with a Winch diameter steel probe rod under ! O -n i moderate pressure. However, we observed an approximately 15 -foot by 15 -foot arest of exposed, loose, = m water -saturated soils, located in the southwestern corner of the main slab area, The loose fill material rn could be probed up to 8 inches and pumped underfoot.0 Co 0m We used a hand shovel to expose the slab subgrade in several areas, where thz backfill depth exceeded F m two feet and evaluated compaction of the fill using a nuclear deasometer. In-place density tests indicated z or 86% to 89Iz % compaction which do not meet the minimum 90% of the ASTM D-1557 of the maximum dry density for the materials. The tests. also indicated higher than optimum moisture levels in the fill soil.
