Water and Fire Service — 5th Avenue South AESI observed the contractor backfill a trench containing a 4" pipe for fire service and a 2" pipe for water service, located in the right-of+may'appnoximate|y6O'northoftheintenecLionat5°Ave5outhandA|derstreeLTrenchwax4-5'deepandextended across both lanes of the road, from curb to curb. Backfill material consisted of imported 1%" minus crushed rock. The contractor filled in lifts and utilized both a jumping jack and hoepac to achieve compaction. We took density tests on the structural fill, using a nuclear moisture -density gauge, with results listed inthe table below and approximate locations in Figure 1. Test results showed that a minimum of 95% compaction was achieved, determined by the ASTM:D 1557 test procedure (modified proctor). Upon myarrival, | met with Wrt from Wilcox, and Tim from Olympic Paving. Upon myarrival, the general contractor informed mepaving was occurring later than heanticipated. | observed the fire andvvatersemicet/enoh|ine|ocatedintheright-of+wa)\about60feetnorthoftheintersociionat5'hAveSouthandA|derstreot. The trench was about 6 inches deep and extended across both lanes of the road, from curb to curb. The already placed backfill material consisted of1%inch minus crushed rock. The paving contractor informed me the Rice value for the asphalt used was 156.1 pcf, and he intended to place pave the trench line in two -3 inch thick lifts. | observed the base lift was compacted with a combination of double drum roller, and hand push plate. After the base lift was compacted, I obtained compaction readings of the asphalt before informing the contractor I had another appointment tnkeep, and another inspector would arrive onsite. Density Readings I performed two in place density readings on the compacted asphalt with results that ranged from 94 to 97% of the Rice. Conclusion I informed the general and paving contractors the asphalt placement observed today met the 92% compaction criteria.
