The 60 -day trial period for temporary suspension of the garbage and recycle enclosure requirement has
been in effect since the time the Las Brisas restaurant opened on September 15. Since two-thirds of that
time has already elapsed I thought it would check in with you on the status of how waste removal is
working within the Dayton Street collection area.
Our Recycling Coordinator has done several field checks and has conferred with Sound Disposal on
issues pertaining to the present collection approach. I understand service levels have increased as well as
the size of recycling containers in order to accommodate the increase in tenant waste generation. Right
now, according to Sound Disposal, they are considering adding yet another collection day for recycle, to
handle the growing amounts of cardboard. Currently they are collecting 3 days per week with 2 recycle
containers. There appears to be no more space for additional containers.
Despite some construction debris contamination in the recycle stream, which occurred when the smaller
Dayton St. spaces were being prepared for leasing, the collection area has been kept clean and well
organized, and servicing is presently being accomplished with very few issues, despite the number of
containers present. There are currently 5 containers, plus a smaller grease container for Las Brisas.
I am aware the hardware store on the upper level is due to open very soon and the final tenants along
Dayton St. will also add to the waste mix. The Cheesemonger's Table and the Otherworlds outlet have
expressed the desire to have a separate commercial compost collection for food scraps and other
compostibles. Las Brisas could also benefit from this since the diversion of food wastes from the garbage
can potentially decrease garbage service costs.
Right now it is hard to predict what this property will generate on a continual basis when fully occupied,
but the Dayton St. collection area is rapidly nearing capacity, and the busy holiday season approaches.
I would suggest we continue to monitor this situation until we have some history regarding the fully
leased operation of the building. If you see this differently please let me know. In the meantime the
restrictions on parking in the area where the former garbage and recycle enclosure existed will continue.
