SUBJECT: Staff Administrative Design Review for BLD-2009-0124
As part of the Citys review of the sign permit referenced above, staff design review was
required per ECDC 20.60.015.A. Because the sign is located in the BD-1 zone, the design
standards in ECDC 22.43 apply in addition to those general criteria found in the sign code (20.60
ECDC) and the Comprehensive Plan.
The project involves the installation of three wall signs on the second level of Old Milltown at

201 5 Avenue South. Two of the signs (on the north and west facades) are not illuminated, the
wall sign near the entrance on the south façade off the alley from Maple Street will be internally
illuminated. Illuminated signs in the downtown area are permitted subject to conditions found in
20.60.020.M. The proposed wall sign meets criteria with respect to height and type of
illumination. The sign uses reverse channel lettering mounted on an aluminum raceway which
will be painted to match the fascia. The letters are red and black typical of Ace Hardware
corporate colors (reverse-lit with red LEDs).
Staff finds that the proposal is consistent with design criteria in the Comprehensive Plan as well
as the zoning ordinance, specifically ECDC 20.60 and 22.43. Therefore, the designs of the signs
