Exposed soil consists of compacted crushed rock overlying native silty SAND with gravel. Existing foundation blocks and leveling course appear to be founded in native medium dense silty SAND as required. Contractor has installed straw wattles on downslope side of of working area and disturbed soils. TESC measures appear to be appropriate and functioning adequately. No sediment transport evident on the site. TGG engineer discussed geogrid placement with contractor and treatment of corner geogrid placement. Discussed location and discharge point for back of wall drainage collection system. Contractor will contact TGG when ready for inspection of subdrainage and to verify bearing for new wall section within lowermost terrace. Prior to commencing ground disturbance, TGG engineer and contractor met with Building Division inspector (Milton) and Engineering Division inspector (Jennifer) for preconstruction meeting and erosion control discussion. Inspectors indicated TGG to provide field reports. Bldg division to see as geogrid placed; engineering wants to see discharge and spreader pipe, and final erosion. Diagram of back wall subdrains to uncompleted outlet and discharge is shown on attached figure. TGG gave OK to backfill and continue drain rock to within 18 inches of surface. TESC measures are still in place and functioning. All activity is upslope from straw wattles. Contractor excavated for placing consecutive layers of geogrid in accordance with plan and geotechnical engineer recommendations. Contractor had correctly laid out the geogrid in the strength direction at the grades indicated on the plans and was reading to cover the first layer of geogrid. TGG engineer reminded contractor to place thin layer of rock between geogrid layers at corners. TGG engineer verified compaction method (3 or 4 passes with the plate compactor) on loose lifts no more than 4 inches to achieve the recommended compaction of the reinforced zone. Contractor has compaction equipment on site and began compacting lowermost geogrid layer on lower terrace. Contractor had prepared leveling course for the new wall north of the planter area at the south end of the lower terrace. TGG verified strength direction, length of geogrid. Backfill consisted of recycled concrete and native sand material placed in fl- inch loose lifts and compacted in placed with vibratory plate compactor per geotechnical engineer recommendations. At end of day contractor had finished placing geogrid and backfill in upper terrace level, allowing for drainage zone behind blocks. Lower terrace was placed up to second layer of geogrid from bottom layer. TGG engineer verified compaction method (3 or 4 passes with the plate compactor) on loose lifts no more than 4 inches to achieve the recommended compaction of the reinforced zone. Contractor has compaction equipment on site and is using to compact backfill according to geotechnical engineer recommendations. Contractor has completed wall construction except for capstone on upper and lower terrace by 8/2/2019. Dispersion trench constructed in general accordance with the attached sheet as recommended by the geotechnical engineer and called out on the plan. Trench consists of 18-inch wide trench filled with 3/4-inch clean crushed aggregate, with 4-inch perforated spreader pipe capped at both ends laid level within the upper portion of the trench. Pipe covered with fabric to separate the topsoil from the drainage zone. TGG engineer verified that spreader trench was constructed per recommendations. Asked contractor to leave pipe visible with fabric for inspection by City Engineer. Contractor excavating behind block wall on east side to install drainage zone which will weep through the wall face of the planters. All walls less than 3 feet in retained height per city requirement. Contractor will need to reshape the grade and amend the soils with mulch per City engineer requirements prior to final inspection. All disturbed soils have been amended and mulched adequately for final erosion control. Jute netting and wattles added to steep slope areas. Contractor will complete landscape planting in September when the rains return. Wattles should remain in place until new vegetation has been established and can be removed next Spring. The site appears adequately stabilized for final erosion control and for winter conditions. SRW elements and wall drainage have been constructed in general accordance with geotechnical recommendations and approved project plans. Future improvements, other than flagstone pavers and landscaping are beyond the scope of this permit. Final Geotechnical Inspections Report Permit BLD 2019 0610 THE GALLI GROUP Geotechnical Consulting To: City of Edmonds Building Services Department Building Division 1221 Fifth Ave N Edmonds, WA 98020 Subject: FINAL GEOTECHNICAL INSPECTIONS REPORT 7415 Braemar Drive Edmonds, Washington Permit No. BLD 20190610 TGG Project: 2025-3 Date: August 12, 2019 The Galli Group performed geotechnical special inspections for the above project. The project consisted of disassembling an unpermitted segmental retaining wall (SRW), to install reinforcing geogrids, and reducing the lower terrace to create a planting bed in order to bring the work within compliance with height and setback restrictions and to construct an engineered and permitted SRW. The Galli Group provided the design drawings and the following geotechnical special inspections. 1. Erosion Control Temporary: The erosion control devices appear to have functioned adequately throughout the project. 2. Observe and Monitor excavation: Temporary excavation for geogrid reinforced zone was accomplished using hand equipment and maintained stability throughout the project. 3. Subsurface drainage installation: The contractor installed wall drains consisting of 4-inch perforated pipe, surrounded by 3/4 inch clean crushed aggregate, enveloped in nonwoven filter fabric. Zone above the pipe was also backfilled with clean crushed aggregate per plan. All perforated pipe connects to a lateral spreader or dispersion trench 4 feet downslope from the southernmost planter wall. Any collected water will disperse from the trench into the slope. Geogrid place was placed according to approved plan. S. Verify fill and compaction: The backfill consisted of native sand and gravel and recycled concrete. Backfill was compacted per geotechnical engineer approved method consisting of multiple passes of vibratory compactor on 4-inch loose lifts to a firm non -yielding condition. 6. Permanent Erosion Control: TGG Engineer visited the site today. The project area has been permanently stabilized against erosion. All disturbed soils are amended and mulched. Slope areas are covered with jute netting and straw wattles to protect the slope while the planting gets established. Area appeared adequately stabilized for winter conditions. 7. Verify design constraints: All planters constructed within the setbacks were restricted to maximum of 3 feet retained height. The south terrace wall was constructed outside of the setback area per plan. To the best of our knowledge the above improvements were constructed in general accordance with the approved plans. The SRW and geotechnical elements were completed as of this date.
