Tree Solutions Arborist Report-Vehrs SP.pdfConsulting Arbarists Project No, TS - 4607 Observations and Discussion I measured the Shore pine (Pinus contorta) tree to be 25 inches in diameter. The tree appears to hav,- good vigor but there are also symptoms of stress. I found European shoot moth in several sections of the canopy and Sequoia pitch moth within the trunk in a few locations. The drip line of the tree extends 12 feet to the east and 13 feet to the west. There has been some land clearing to the west, outside of the drip fine, that has exposed a root system within the first few inches of the soil surface. The area disturbed covers approximately 50 percent of the tree's critical root zone (CRZ) on the west side. The CRZ is defined as an area equal to one radial foot extending from the tree for each inch of trunk diameter. This is a more accurate representation of the area where a tree's root system is located rather than the drip line. The City is requiring improvements to the right-of-way (ROW) that would extend a sidewalk across the front of the property to the east of the tree. The back of the sidewalk will be six to seven feet away from the base of the tree's trunk. To construct the walk will require removal of organics from the top of the soil surface. Due to the shallow root system it is likely that feeder and absorptive roots will be negatively impacted. The cleared area will need to be compacted before approximately 24 inches of fill will be placed over the surface. The fill will need to be graded down at a 1:1 ratio, which would place the fill up to the base of the tree. An impervious sidewalk will need to be placed over the fill soil. To safety construct the sidewalk, the entire CRZ and drip line area east of the tree will need to have fill soil placed over the existing grade. With compaction and the placement of fill, the soil hydrology will be altered leading to soils that retain moisture. Pine trees do not tolerate soils with high moisture retention properties. If the requested ROW improvements occur there will be an extensive incursion into the tree's root system, which will lead to the trees decline. These improvements do not adhere to the Edmonds City Code Section 18.45.050 (H) for a retained tree. -1-1,10V, 1 .1 11 1 Ave: N, (SiJie `;rl-J,,%, .NA Phone Memorandum TO: Jeff Vehrs SITE: 1040 e Ave. S Edmonds WA RE: Pine Tree and Construction Impacts DATE- December 8,.
