Meeting with the Owners of the Edmonds Theatre
Commissioner Preston recalled that, at the last meeting, Commissioner Deiner-Karr agreed to send him the photographs and
information she had collected on the Edmonds Theatre. While he received photographs of the property on 4' Avenue and
Daley Street, he hasn't received any of the Edmonds Theatre. Mr. Chave said there are some photographs in the files from
the surveys, and he would contact Commissioner Deiner-Karr to see if she has more.
Commissioner Preston reported that he participated in a meeting with the owners of the Edmonds Theatre that was set up by
Council Member Olsen. The owners are interested in preserving the character and charm of the building and adding it to the
Register. Council Member Johnson said she also participated in the meeting. They wanted to know more about the tax
benefit associated with being on the Register, and she suggested it would be helpful for the Commission to provide them with
a description of the program. They are planning to replace the roof and do some electronic upgrades inside, and it would be
helpful for the Commission to also provide information about how those changes might impact the property's eligibility for
the Register. Mr. Chave said he sent information to the owners regarding the historic preservation program, explaining that
unless the interior of the theatre was designated on the Register, they wouldn't be prevented from doing upgrades inside.
The Commission discussed that the owners of the Edmonds Theatre own a number of other properties in downtown
Edmonds, too. They agreed they should talk to them about preserving the charm of the existing properties as new features are y
added. Mr. Chave suggested that if they have a good experience with the theatre it may open their eyes to potentially doing +;
other buildings, as well.
