ORDINANCE NO. 2408
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EDMONDS, WASHING -
TON, AMENDING SECTION 8.16.030 OF THE EDMONDS
CITY CODE REGARDING SPEED LIMITS ON NINTH
AVENUE SOUTH, AMENDING SECTION 1 OF ORDINANCE
NO. 2395 AND SECTION 8.16.040 OF THE EDMONDS
CITY CODE DECREASING SPEED LIMITS ON CERTAIN
STREETS AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City Engineer, acting as the City's
Traffic Engineer, has conducted engineering and traffic
investigations and has determined that the speed limit
permitted by state law on Ninth Avenue South from 232nd Street
S.W. to the southern city limits (50 feet north of 234th
Street S.W.) is less than is necessary for safe operation of
vehicles thereon under the conditions found to exist upon such
street, and
WHEREAS, based upon said engineering and traffic
investigations the City Engineer, acting as the City's Traffic
Engineer, has determined that the speed limit provided in the
Edmonds City Code for Ninth Avenue South from Dayton Street to
232nd Street S.W. should be extended to Ninth Avenue South
from 232nd Street S.W. to the southern city limits and has
recommended such change to the city council, and
WHEREAS, the City Council adopts the recommendation of
the City Engineer that the speed limit on Ninth Avenue South
be so extended and changed, and
WHEREAS, Section 1 of Ordinance No. 2395, passed by
the City Council on September 13, 1983, requires amendment for
clarification purposes only, now, therefore,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EDMONDS, WASHINGTON,
DO ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Section 8.16.030 of the Edmonds City Code
is hereby amended to read as follows:
8.16.030 INCREASING SPEED LIMIT IN CERTAIN ZONES
It is determined upon the basis of an engineering and
traffic investigation that the speed permitted by state
law upon the following streets is less than is necessary
for safe operation of vehicles thereon by reason of the
designation and signposting of the streets as arterial
highways and by reason of widely spaced intersections and
it is declared that the speed limit shall be as herein-
after set forth on those streets or parts of streets
designated in this section at the times specified when
signs are erected giving notice thereof, but in no case
shall the speed limit exceed thirty-five miles per hour,
except with approval of state highway commission.

Section 2. The Superintendent of Public Works is
hereby directed to post signs in conspicuous locations consis-
tent with the provisions of this ordinance upon the effective
date of this ordinance.
Section 3. Section 1 of Ordinance No. 2395 and
Section 8.16.040 of the Edmonds City Code are hereby amended
to read as follows:
8.16.040 DECREASE OF STATE LAW MAXIMUM SPEED
It is determined upon the basis of engineering and
traffic investigation that the speed permitted by
state law outside of business and residence
districts as applicable upon the following set
forth streets is greater than is reasonable or safe
under the conditions found to exist upon the
streets and it is declared that the speed limit
shall be the miles per hour as herein set forth on
those streets or parts of streets herein designated
at the times herein specified when signs are
erected giving notice thereof:
