We visited the site today at the request of Christian Santiago to provide geotechnical consultation and
earthwork construction monitoring services for the residential deck development project located 18308
84t' Place West in Edmonds, WA.
Upon arrival we met with the homeowner who informed us each of the deck post foundation excavations
had been completed. We were also informed a 12-inch diameter sonotube with approximately 2-foot
square footing would be installed in each excavation.
We observed approximately 6 foundation excavations around the perimeter of the proposed elevated
deck structure. The excavations measured approximately 30- to 36-inches in diameter and ranged in
depth from approximately 3.5- to 6.0-feet below the existing ground surface. Through visual inspection
we verified that each excavation was advanced approximately 1-foot into competent native soils and
confirmed medium dense or better conditions by probing subgrade with a %2-inch diameter steel probe
rod under moderate pressure, which, on average yielded 1- to 2-inches. We were informed the third
excavation in from the northeast corner of the proposed deck had encountered significant boulders at
around 3.5-feet below the existing ground surface. The depth at which the boulders were encountered
appeared to be in competent native soils and we recommended filling the base of the excavation with
5/8-inch minus crushed rock or similar to create a level surface to place footing form on.
Our findings and conclusions are based on observations made while on site. The foundation excavations
evaluated today appear to be in accordance with the plans and our recommendations; it is our opinion
that the subgrade soils observed today should support the designed loads.
