ADB-47-82 ERIC ANDERSON - Review of freestanding sign for Five Corners Plaza at 8406 Bowdoin Way (BN) The main part of the proposed sign will be 5 1/2' high and 6' wide, and it will have two wings 4 1/2' tall and 5' long. The individual tenant signs will be either sandblasted or painted, the sign field being brown and the lettering cream colored. The gasoline price signs will have interchangeable numbers. Freestanding signs are discouraged in the BN zone unless the applicant can demonstrate to the ADB that no reasonable alternative exists to satisfy the identification needs of the business, and overall recommended maximum height is 14'. Board members noted that there are freestanding signs on the other business corners of that intersection. Installation of a propane tank was also proposed to serve recreational vehicles. The Fire Code requires that such tanks be located at least 10' away from any flammable objects, including plantings. One parking stall will be lost for the propane tank. Maximum height of the tank will be 5' and the proposed sign will help to screen it. The sign must not constitute a sight distance problem for either of the entrances. The corner of the site where the sign will be erected drops off and the applicant wanted the flexibility to locate the sign where it would not cause sight problems. He said he would try to have a representative of the awning company attend and he asked that the Board review his application. No one arrived from the awning company. The Board reviewed the application and found no problems. The awning will be of fabric with lettering identifying the store on the front. The existing lighted and blinking sign will be removed.
