It consists of environmental duties, helping the youth specifically families with babies -toddlers, and regularly working with South King County Cats to help as many cats as we can. Cats, babies, and the environment are not the extent of my care. I have been trying to find volunteer work or even a job at a senior citizen home. A dream I've had since I was a child is to run a non-profit homeless center/home. I care immensely about the safety of humans, animals, and plant life across entire world. I hope to bring my care and experience to Edmonds as a Youth Commission member. 2. Strengths I would contribute are, a different perspective, good public speaking skills, huge connection with the disabled community(I am Deaf), and my work ethic. 3. 1 am most passionate about an safe and equal environment, and helping mother nature heal from our destruction. A project idea would be creating a garden that anyone can contribute to that is welcome to everyone to use. There can be certain events or things at the garden that spread awareness like for example a screening or discussion about human rights and different cultures. It is a big goal but I believe accomplishable. An issue impacting Edmonds that I am most passionate about is variety and affordab Student Signature: Parent/Guardian Signature: 2 Packet Pg. 10 3.1.c 1. Environmental protection is always something I have been very passionate about. To take action on this issue in Edmonds I volunteered to clean up invasive plants in Yost park. Growing up, Yost park has always been a beautiful place to take a walk or spend time with summer camps and I want to ensure that it will remain a healthy park for years to come. Within the school environment I have always strived to be a leader which is seen in my participation in Link crew and athletics. During Link crew I help to provide a smooth transition for incoming freshmen. I saw this as an opportunity to give freshmen my advice from personal experiences as the program was very helpful for me. I was also selected captain on my freshman volleyball team for demonstrating coachability and good sportsmanship. This taught me a lot about having a positive mindset and working with my teammates. Additionally, I was a part of the girls varsity tennis team which taught me time management skills. Working in different types of environments with a variety of people has built my leadership skills which I think will aid me in discussing my opinions with others and creating a positive impact. 2. Some strengths and qualities that I believe I possess that will positively impact my time on the Edmonds Youth commission is my passion for social justice, open mindedness, and empathy. Since a young age I have always cared about creating an equitable community around me especially with the Black Lives Matter protests last year and living in Seattle and observing the ongoing homelessness issue first hand. Growing up in a German immigrant household I have always been exposed to a variety of cultural values different from American values creating my sense of open mindedness towards various life styles. A valuable strength I possess is my ability to empathize with others which will be important for helping Edmonds youth as I am able to relate and connect to issues they are going through. 3. An issue impacting Edmonds that I am most passionate about is variety and affordability in food places especially for Edmonds youth. I consider Edmonds a family friendly town but it is difficult to find places to eat because a majority of Edmonds dining is either expensive dining or Breweries/wineries. It is upsetting seeing former businesses shutting down and having a winery move in because it leaves one less option for teens. To help take action for this issue I will advocate to the city council the importance of bringing in affordable eateries in the form of food trucks or events with food stands. The Edmonds Commons is currently looking for businesses to occupy the plaza. I am hoping that I could influence bringing in affordable food places that cater more towards casual dining and take out. Improving this issue in Edmonds will significantly provide a better downtown environment for teens and other Edmonds youth creating a better sense of community. What volunteer/work experience or extracurricular activities have you been involved in that may contribute to your success as an Edmonds Youth Commission member? In middle school I was in a leadership class that taught about how to be a leader and how to treat people kindly and respectfully. I also got to give suggestions for school events and help set them up. In addition, I was manager of the video announcements in 8th grade, so I got to advertise important events and recruit classmates, teachers, and other members of the school community to be featured in these announcements. I really enjoyed being the manager because I felt like I was able to bring the school community together through videos of us making jokes or talking about an upcoming event. I have also played softball for a total of 4 years, including select for two years and varsity during my freshman year. Playing softball definitely taught me more on how to work together and make sure to communicate. I was able to meet lots of new people and build new bonds and practice a lot of teamwork and communication. 2. What personal strengths/skills will you contribute to the success of the Edmonds Youth Commission? Personal strengths that I will contribute are good teamwork, organization, different perspectives, determination, and creativity. A skill that makes me a good team member is that I will always listen to everyone's ideas and try my best to include their ideas. I also enjoy spreading information that will be helpful and beneficial by handing out fliers, hanging posters, and posting information on social media. These strengths will help contribute to the success of the Youth Commission because I will be able to work with the group easily, bring many different Packet Pg. 13 3.1.d ideas, determine the best one, and make the idea into a reality. 3. What issue impacting the Edmonds community are you most passionate about? Do you have any ideas on how to begin addressing this issue? Outline a project idea for the Edmonds youth commission that may begin to address this issue. I am most passionate about affordable housing and transit. Affordable housing is a big problem in Edmonds; most developers buy properties that could fit multiple townhomes or an apartment building that could have many people living in it but instead build a 1.3 million dollar house for one person to live in. It is a waste of property as no one benefits from it besides the select few with money laying around to buy a house like that. Mansions in downtown Edmonds or really any part of the city aren't beneficial but multi family homes such as duplexes, apartment buildings, and townhouses do benefit people as they are more affordable and can fit more people. The lack of affordable housing causes problems for many families. Paying for housing is usually adults first expense, which makes it hard for families to pay for food, sports, and other basics. Many students in the Edmonds school district don't have a safe place to live or a proper place to be able to do their school work which prevents them from learning. Affordable housing provides stability for families as it means they won't have to move around all the time which can be hard on the family as a whole. A project the Youth Commission could do to address this is to go on a tour around Edmonds to show what types of homes benefit people and would be considered affordable housing and then showing what isn't considered affordable. They could also put out an article on how the lack of affordable housing affects many youth in the school district and explain how affordable housing is good as many people think it's bad. Transit is an easy way to go around from city to city or neighborhood to neighborhood. A big benefit is that it takes people out of cars and reduces greenhouse gases. Global warming poses a big threat to everyone in the world but especially to youth as we are left with the mistakes of our elders although we still contribute to it. I would like to live in a world where I don't have to worry about how many years we have left till the planet becomes inhabitable. A way to address the issue of how we hurt our planet by driving all the time is to teach people about how transit works and how simple it really is with technology such as apps that tell you exactly when your bus is coming and shows you all the stops. A project the Youth Commission could do is to make a presentation on how transit benefits everyone. By riding transit we are helping reduce traffic which can be a big problem. Transit also takes people out of their cars which helps lower the amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted from daily commutes. The Youth Commission could also take people on bus rides around Edmonds and demonstrate how easy it can be to ride the bus for errands, for work or even school. What volunteer/work experience or extracurricular activities have you been involved in that may contribute to your success as an Edmonds Youth Commission member? Since sophomore year I've participated in Associative Student Body — first as vice president, this year as Junior class president. Through this I've learned the importance of clear communication, timeliness, and strong leadership. I've learned firsthand that one needs to give simple, firm directions and delegate distinct responsibilities in order to be an effective leader. Similarly, to be an effective follower of directions, it's vital to be timely and attentive. Besides ASB, I participated in Speech and Debate sophomore year, which, though it was online, helped me hone my public speaking skills and got me used to a team environment. I was also a member of a creative writing club for freshman and sophomore year, which enhanced my ability to think quickly and write well. Lastly, my membership in an international students' club during freshman year exposed me more thoroughly to different cultures and backgrounds, particularly those throughout Africa and Asia. 2. What personal strengths/skills will you contribute to the success of the Edmonds Youth Commission? will contribute my strengths in critical thinking, open-mindedness, and, if the opportunity arises, writing and filmmaking to the success of Edmonds Youth Commission. It can take me a long time to make up my mind, but because of this I excel in thinking critically and analyzing issues from different possible viewpoints. I am proficient in problem -solving, due in great part to my patience in tackling difficulties. As far as open-mindedness goes, growing up hearing opinions from two parents with very different processes of reasoning, backgrounds, and ways of looking at issues has led to me being open to new ideas or those that differ from mine. I am also tolerant of differing opinions, having been surrounded by friends and peers who have very different beliefs than mine while avoiding arguments or drama about them. Lastly, two developed skills I have are in writing and filmmaking. I admit that there are quicker and more eloquent writers than I, but it's something I have done very well at during my academic career. Through classes and the above -mentioned creative writing club, I've grown into a strong writer for both creative and academic purposes. Whether or not it will be of any help in Edmonds Youth Commission, I also have detailed experience in filmmaking and editing. Packet Pg. 24 3.1.f 3. What issue impacting the Edmonds community are you most passionate about? Do you have any ideas on how to begin addressing this issue? Outline a project idea for the Edmonds youth commission that may begin to address this issue. To be completely honest, I'm not really caught up to any issues within the Edmonds community. Much of the reason I want to join Edmonds Youth Commission is to learn more about the problems in my community and what I can do about them. However, one thing that piques my interest is adolescent mental health in Edmonds. As we have all seen, COVID-19 has led to mental distress for many young people, due to everything from social isolation to the loss of family. There's been talk about a mental health epidemic sweeping the American youth for years, but it has become ever more tangible and severe during the pandemic. Additionally, Mental Health America ranks Washington 43rd in the nation for youth access to mental health care. In the wake of a problem that is prevalent all across the US but especially in our state, I've developed one small proposal to help support mental health for youth in Edmonds. While researching issues in Edmonds, I realized that I had never heard of any of Edmonds or Snohomish County's mental health support programs prior to actively searching for them, and it was difficult to find what I was looking for even when I did. With this, I wondered if there was a better way to let people know about the various mental health resources in our city. I would like to create a website for Edmonds with a list of website links and addresses for places that offer mental health services in the Edmonds area, sorted by free and paid services. My idea is nothing groundbreaking, but I think it could be one small step towards improving awareness of the programs that are available and helping those in crisis feel that there is somewhere to turn to. If all mental health resources are kept in one easy -to -find place, it could ease the process of seeking help for those who need it most.
