I. CALL TO ORDER
Co -Chairman Koleb Nichols motioned to call the meeting to order at 6:00 pm in Room
123 in the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., Edmonds
Jacob Sawyer seconded that motion
Motion passed unanimously
Co -Chairman Kaleb Nichols moved to make Jacob Sawyer interim Secretary
Jacob Sawyer seconded that motion

II. MINUTES - Approval of 11/20/19
Co -Chairman Kaleb Nichols moved to approve 12/18/19 meeting's minutes with no
revisions

III. CITY COUNCIL LIAISON
- Councilwoman Laura Johnson
- Discussing Ms. Johnson's background in advocating for gun safety

IV. WHAT'S HAPPENING IN CITY COUNCIL?
- Plan to revitalize Highway 99
- 183 million dollar project
- Federal funding for infrastructure dropped
- Project divided into seven sections
- Safety is the primary concern
- New center median
- 10 million dollar price tag for median plus other safety measures
- Action item to approve Highway 99 changes passed unanimously!
- Changing building codes to allow waterfront hotels potentially
- Reviewing rules for city council procedure
- Trying to make City Council easier to understand for citizens
V. DEBRIEF REPORT TO COUNCIL
- Kaleb did a great job speaking
- The presentation was well -received
- We need an eventual date to present our proposals to council
- More confidence on future plans
- Commission needs to get out more general statements
VI. ADVERTISING PLAN
- Advertising could be improved
- Workload needs to be more evenly spread
- Advertising plan for recruitment needed as well
- Need tentative topics for next forum
- Need to reserve Library Plaza quickly
- Forum will likely be the week before Earth Day
- Set roles/format for advertising
- List over different advertising methods
- Newspapers
- Instagram
- Flyers?
- Schools - at least 1 person per high school (MHS, MTHS, EWHS)
- Tackle feeder schools for high schools plus K-8/12 schools
- Hard to target community college
- Contact running -start counselor for EDCC

- Looking into how budget is used for mental health

- Pull of Shane Hope's presentation to city council
- Potential of declaring a climate crisis

- Presentation to be made around Earth Day

IX. SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN SCHOOLS
- March 8 - International Women's Day in Edmonds
- Held at the Edmonds Yacht Club
- Contact the School District Superintendent
- Info on rape culture
- Classes on sexual harassment/assault/rape/consent
- Healthy ideas need to be encouraged in the school system
- Youth agree that there is a fault in the education system
- Bill in Washington Congress to introduce sexual health education as compulsory
X. GROUP COMMENTS
- Caitlin - March 1st: Film in Seattle that features March for Lives groups
- Brook - Question for Ms. Johnson: are all city buildings powered with renewable
energy?
- Coal and natural gas trains still pass through Edmonds
- Resolution passed to urge federal officials to ban the passage of coal and oil trains
through Edmonds
