Youth Commission Meeting Minutes 9/16/2020

I. CALL TO ORDER
Brook Roberts motioned to call the meeting to order at 6:02 pm over Zoom
Secretary Owen Lee seconded that motion
Motion passed unanimously
Brook read the Native American Land Statement
II. RECRUITMENT UPDATE
- Shannon gave a recruitment update
- We have six spots and six applications
- We have four different schools represented among the six applicants
- Deadline extended for the next two weeks
III. MAYOR'S CLIMATE PROTECTION COMMITTEE
- We met with Ter? who is a water -focused lawyer, worked on National Climate
Assessment and now works as Co-chair of Mayor's Climate Committee
- Hard to predict how much water we will have
- Increasing water issues as glaciers melt
- In 2010 we adopted a climate action plan, currently working on updating it
- Climate Committee working on unofficial public outreach (education, book clubs, etc. to
get people talking about and educated on climate change)
- Stopped by COVID-19
- Reaching out to see how the Youth Commission can intersect with Mayor's Committee
- Want more visibility

- We offered advice about social media
- Website is out of date
- Youth Commission recommends creating Instagram account to target youth, and using
Facebook groups to target adults, maybe YouTube lectures?
- They are planning a lecture series
- We offered topics we would be interested in learning about
IV. ORDINANCE CHANGES
- The application process will end in October
- Terms will be two years
- Summer meetings will be special meetings
V. SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH
- Created website
- Zoom sessions for training
- Community panel on September 23rd
- Advertising in businesses and churches
- We need more counselors and mental health educators in schools
- District could create a committee or taskforce
- Council can recommend this to district
- A lot of problems around mental health education in the district
- Talking to counselors is really hard to do as a student logistically
- If there was an event with a medical professional we still don't know if we would
participate because the culture around mental health is bad
- We could have a campaign where people we respect talk about their battles with
mental illness
- Shoreline has drop -in social work and counselor appointments that are free and don't
commit you; could we work towards this?
- Health & Human Services are going to get additional budget this year
Secretary Owen Lee moved to remove our sixth item, 'Brainstorming for Future
Events/Plans" from our agenda
Sydney Pearson seconded that motion
Motion passed unanimously
VI. DIVERSITY
- Compile a list of contacts from Black Student Unions, Colors Unidos, Asian Pacific
Islander Student Unions, etc from:
- Edmonds Woodway

Create a graphic for them to distribute
VII. WHAT IS CITY COUNCIL COVERING?
- Councilwoman Johnson updated us on what Council is working on
- lots of COVID-19 response
- land use
- student representative
- not many applications
- we have not been following much
- now that we are meeting again we can follow it more (read MyEdmondsNews recaps of
meetings!)
