Youth Commission Meeting Minutes 2/17/2021

I. CALL TO ORDER
Chair Owen Leemoved to call the meeting to order at 6:07 pm over Zoom
Jacob Sawyer read the land acknowledgement statement
II. CONSENT AGENDA
➢ No completed items to approve, no quorum present
III. PRACTICING COUNCIL PRONOUNS PRESENTATION
➢ Finn and Owen are the commissioners present for reading the presentation
➢ The presentation moved to March 3rd for Diversity Commission, March 9th for Council
➢ General Presentation overview + practice with feedback
➢ Feedback on presentation
o Casey: Split up Finn's slides to divide the information better
o Brooke: Simplify the title to explain content better ("pronoun request/inclusion")
o Brooke: Some of the slides are over -wordy
o Brooke: Cover non -binary as well as diving deeper into positive impacts
o Owen: positive impacts have been stated
o Casey: Focus entirely on positives rather than potential negatives
o Laura: Define some of the terms more concretely

o Laura: Work to educate on the importance of gender and pronouns as a group
effort and inclusion
o Laura: Give examples of other schools or cities that have embraced
pronouns+personal stories
o Owen: Originally the presentation was derived from the paper request
o Brooke: Add some color and vibrance to the presentation
o Owen: In the future, give feedback before the presentation stage

IV. USING CANVA TO CREATE GRAPHICS
➢ Helpful to go through Canva and explore how to use it
➢ Take Canva skills back to the individual committees
➢ Canva teams for shared designs
➢ League Spartan is the primary font used for Youth Commission designs so far
➢ Remove.bg is a site that helps remove background images for Canva templates
➢ Elements section has graphical features within Canva that can be used
➢ Colors have codes to make matching more simple
➢ Media can be uploaded for use
➢ 10 minutes for experimenting and testing Canva
V. INSTAGRAM STORY COMMISSIONER INTROS
➢ Makes commissioners feel more like people
➢ Commissioners need to fill out their media release waiver
➢ Decide a schedule
➢ Name, grade, school, pronouns + one more question
➢ Finn: Hobby
➢ Brooke: A skill learned during quarantine
➢ Jacob: Why did they join the commission?
➢ How do we get people to fill out their waiver?
➢ Send them out every other day for a period of three weeks
➢ Blank walls would be the best background
➢ Post them in the morning for the best traffic
VI. CONFIRMING PSRC PRESENTATION DATE
➢ Unable to vote w/o a quorum
➢ Urban planning group for counties including Snohomish
➢ How do we travel now and how do we want to travel?
➢ Is meeting with the PSRC a good use of Commission time?
o Agreed that the answer is yes

➢ The PSRC plans out to 2050
➢ Lots of the questions are individual
➢ We should potentially recommend other groups that they speak to
VII. COMMITTEE UPDATES
➢ Environmental Committee
o Work on Earth Day event
o Partner with the city for that event
o Organized by the Parks Dept.
o YMCA holds a YESC event for submitting proposals
➢ Diversity Committee
o Nothing to present this meeting
➢ Youth & Government Committee
o Working on fairvote correspondence
o Education on municipal government
➢ Mental Health Committee
o Nothing to present for this meeting
VII. FINAL COMMENTS
➢ Check PROS plan for City Email
➢ Commission member to join the advisory committee
➢ Tomorrow is the open house for the climate action plan
