CALL TO ORDER Chair Owen Lee called the meeting to order at 6:03 pm. Brooke Rinehimer read the land acknowledgment statement. II. ADJUSTMENTS TO AGENDA/TEMPORARY ROLES Owen Lee makes a motion to elect Brooke Rinehimer as interim secretary. Motion seconded by Finn Paynich. Motion passes. Brook Roberts makes a motion to take 5 minutes off of the "Coronavirus Info Sharing" agenda item. Motion seconded by Owen Lee. Motion passes. III. APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT AGENDA Owen Lee makes a motion to approve the Consent Agenda for September 8th, 2021. Motion seconded by Brook Roberts. Motion passes. IV. PUBLIC COMMENT No public present. V. INTRODUCTION OF JAY SANDSTROM TO YOUTH COMMISSION Jay Sandstrom will be advising the Youth Commission while Casey Colley is on maternity leave. • Began working for the city of Edmonds in October 2020. • Previously worked for the city of Mill Creek, and worked with the city's Youth Board there. Page 1.1.2 Casey Colley - please put Jay into the emails we send to her since she could leave on maternity leave sooner than planned. Youth Commission members present at the meeting introduce themselves to Jay one -by -one. VI. APPLICATION UPDATES (CASEY) We have received 6 applications for our 4 available spots on the Youth Commission. Interviews are set for October 4th, 2021 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The Youth Commission should be fully seated by our meeting on October 13th, 2021. Elections (Chair/Co-Chair/Secretary/Social Media Manager) will be held during our second meeting with the new members. VII. CORONAVIRUS INFO SHARING Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds Woodway, Shoreline High Schools are not doing a great job handling the pandemic. • Question raised: should the Youth Commission say anything? o Contact tracing o Focusing on social distancing policies, mask -wearing, vaccinations o This creates an opportunity for youth to speak to youth o Stick to facts Talk about creating a Facebook account linked to the Youth Commission's Instagram. Sydney Pearson will write the press release. • Draft finished by Saturday morning (September 25th, 2021) Brook Roberts - suggestion to create Instagram story posts for the press release. VIII. NEW YOUTH COMMISSION AGENDA FORMAT Brook Roberts introduces/proposes new format for Youth Commission agendas. Owen Lee makes a motion to approve the new agenda format proposed by Brook Roberts. Motion seconded by Brook Roberts. Motion passes. IX. CURRENT EVENTS IN EDMONDS The commission expressed a desire to establish regular attendance at City Council meetings and Diversity Commission meetings. • My Edmonds News —* can sign up for their weekly email, follow on Twitter. Page 1.1.3 o My Edmonds News does live tweets of City Council meetings. The goal for the upcoming year is to have at least one Youth Commission Representative at each City Council meeting. Councilwoman Johnson: did not feel safe at in -person City Council meetings Brook Roberts - suggests the creation of a calendar with volunteer opportunities in the city • The City of Edmonds website has numerous calendars, some of which include information along these lines. X. COMMITTEE UPDATES Youth and Government - (Brook Roberts) - Currently working on their Introduction to Municipal Government guide. Environment - (Brooke Rinehimer) - No progress thus far; currently only 1 member in the group because of commission seat vacancies. Diversity - (Owen Lee) - Currently learning about homelessness task force, community advisory board for those with disabilities. Mental Health - No members present to give an update. XI. FINAL COMMENTS Casey - The members of the Edmonds Youth Commission have been invited to attend the Diversity Commission meeting on October 6th, 2021. XII. ADJOURN Chair Owen Lee adjourned the meeting at 7:29 pm.
