I provided support, technical assistance and training for staff and parents in a federally funded comprehensive early childhood education program for low-income children and their families in King County outside of Seattle and Pierce County outside of Tacoma. I worked with children with special needs, including cognitive, emotional and physical differences. This organization had a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, as we served vulnerable families and were committed to having a staff that reflected our multicultural population. 2015-2017 Peace Corps Volunteer, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. I served as a Health volunteer in a very rural, very poor Zulu community in South Africa, developing programs with community workers to address the high rate of HIV/AIDS, particularly among young women, in the area. I was selected to serve on the Peace Corps South Africa Diversity Committee, which included reviewing policies and developing and presenting training for new volunteers. Organizational affiliations: Member, Racial Justice Committee; Chair, Community Engagement Committee and representative to the Social Justice Council; founder and facilitator, Activist Circle, Edmonds Unitarian Universalist Congregation. Member, Racial Justice Team, Edmonds United Methodist Church. Active participant in the Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. Why are you seeking this appointment? I am committed to supporting the inherent worth and dignity of all people and am passionate about working toward a more just society for everyone. I strive to be anti -racist, knowing that is an ongoing process. I am an older white straight, well-educated, economically secure, cis -gender non-Christian woman, which means I have privilege in many ways, but also know elements of my identity carry no privilege. (For example, in South Africa, I was treated with respect because of my age Ina way that does not occur in this country.) I am a grandparent with LGBTQ+grandchildren and one with special needs, and I want to work toward a world where they are safe and able to live full lives, comfortable in their identities and supported through their challenges. I value diversity and seek out opportunities to learn and celebrate our differences. I am looking for opportunities to use my privilege, knowledge, and experiences to help people who are marginalized, and also to hope those with privilege understand their responsibility to lessen that marginalization. I we this Commission as a way to work with others concerned about justice for all people and honoring the diversity in our community. I want to help the community of Edmonds and the City of Edmonds be more welcoming and inclusive for all. What skills and knowledge do you have to meet the selection criteria? I have considerable experience developing and providing training to groups on a wide range of topics, including diversity and inclusion, team -building, and communication skills. For example, I co -facilitated a class on "Examining Whiteness" at Edmonds Unitarian Universalist Congregation just before the pandemic ended in -person gatherings. I am familiar with key racial justice concepts including intersectionality, white supremacy culture, white fragility, and anti -racism. I have co-faclltated three separate book discussions of Ijeoma Olues book, So You Want to Talk About Race. I have used Race and Social Justice Race Equity Tools (developed by City of Seattle and by King County) to analyze the effectiveness of organizations in eliminating racial inequities and in developing culturally sensitive programs and services at my last employer, in the Peace Corps, and most recently in my church. I see these tools as valuable ways to assess an organization's effectiveness in addressing diversity issues and I am pleased to see the Diversity Commission also recognizes their importance. 1 have decades of experience working with low-income children and their families and with a culturally diverse staff. Following George Floyd's murder, I participated in daily, then weekly protests, standing for racial justice, in a prominent Edmonds location for over two years. I feel I connected with many pedestrians, both those who supported and those who disagreed with my signs that said, "Black Lives Matter" and "End Racism Now." At my church I was active in the development and implementation of the Stand for LGBTQI Justice and Equity in 2012 and the Stand for Racial Justice: Dismantling White Supremacy Culture and Promoting Multicultural Inclusion in 2019. (Note: we recognize the ableism of the word "Stand" and want to find a better word to express our commitment to justice.)
