The motion passed unanimously. IV. PUBLIC COMMENT VIA ZOOM ➢ No public comments V. GREEN EDMONDS CAMPAIGN & EARTH DAY ACTIVITIES ➢ We discussed a plans and details for the Earth Day volunteering beach cleanup: o The public has to register for it o We want outreach materials about the Youth Commission at the volunteer booths o Mara will be a lead to help coordinate supplies ■ She will pick up vests and the individually wrapped snacks o We need to decide what snacks we want o Potential promotional things for the Youth Commission to do at this event: ■ Post pictures on our Instagram ■ Possibly hand out info pamphlets about the Youth Commission saying that we are recruiting o Bring name tags for volunteers ➢ Green Edmonds campaign o We should try to find the chalkboards around Edmonds (at the Frances Anderson center, at restaurants), write our personal environmental pledges on them, then post pictures to our Instagram VI. SAM YI WASHINGTON OFFICE OF EQUITY QUARTER MEETING UPDATE ➢ Sam went to the Office of Equity quarter meeting and talked about his experience: o At the conference, they talked about whenever we have the opportunity to influence power, we as the youth need to take it o Don't let people tell you you're too young to speak up o Digital literacy is one of the priorities of the Office of Equity o They talked a lot about how to take voices of oppressed and uplift them ■ People with privilege should use it to uplift marginalized voices o Talked about how to address implicit bias: ■ Become aware of your own implicit bias ■ Know that the impact of bias is the same whether its explicit or implicit o Addressed intersectionality o Talked about how it is often expected for youth to succeed with limited equity knowledge we have o Talked about how the language used in a lot of legislation is very exclusionary; and can be a roadblock for youth (and is sometimes engineered for that reason) o Addressed the tokenization of students in diversity projects o Address how leaders of student groups often white and wealthy and don't represent majority of students; this is an issue that needs to be fixed VII. SIGNUPGENIUS COMMITTEE MEETINGS CHECK -IN ➢ Sign up for a committee meeting to attend through the SignUp Genius VIII. YOUTH & GOVERNMENT COMMITTEE SEATTLEU STATE YOUTH COURT CONFERENCE UPDATE ➢ Audrey reported on the SeattleU State Youth Court Conference: o What is a youth court? ■ It is a community based intervention and prevention program ■ A court for traffic offenders age 18 and under that determines the appropriate sanction for peers and hold them accountable ■ Punishments are personalized to each individual who goes through the youth court ■ There are youth courts for traffic, civil infractions, and school rule violations o Some of the benefits of youth courts are: ■ It is rewarding to see peers grow from this experience ■ It is a positive experience for offenders o In order to start one, you need to recruit enough members to run it and it needs to meet once a month o If we want to set up a youth court, we need to consider if we need a budget and what we would do with it o We could partner with our sister youth court in Shoreline or the community court on 99 IX. NAMI PRESENTATIONS DISCUSSION ➢ Diane will reach out for clarification about this presentation; is the Youth Commission putting it on? do we want NAMI to come to one of our meetings? X. FINAL PRESENTATION TO EDMONDS CITY COUNCIL INTRODUCTION ➢ We looked at our previous presentations to council and brainstormed what we should include in our new one (what we've been doing this year, goals) ➢ Audrey, Julie, and Sam will be creating the slides and have a draft by our next meeting ➢ We should all come to the presentation, even if we aren't presenting ➢ Future goals that we want to mention in the presentation: o Creating a youth court o Mental health committee ideas about adding more resources to the website o Better engagement/participation in meetings o Get a table at the Saturday market? o See ourselves out in community more o Increase our social media ➢ Accomplishments that we want to mention in the presentation: o Our streeteries statement o How we established our initial social media presence o The successes of committees XI. FINAL COMMENTS ➢ Our Earth Day events should be fun! ➢ We could consider mental health and overdose prevention education work for the Mental Health Committee and put resources about drugs on the website XII.
