ROLE CALL & ABSENCES Co -Chair Brook Roberts moved to call the meeting to order at 6:06 PM over Zoom. Aaron read the land acknowledgement statement. II. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Brook moved to approve the agenda; Sam seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. III. APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES OF APRIL 27TH, 2022 Brook made a motion to approve the minutes of the April 27th, 2022 meeting; Sam seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. PUBLIC COMMENT VIA ZOOM No public comments. V. UPDATE ON UNLAWFUL OCCUPATION ORDINANCE We discussed the recent ordinance about houselessness. Brooke is concerned that it does nothing to address why someone would want to refuse services (that their hesitancy could be rooted in fear of the government, etc.). Councilmember Buckshnis mentioned that it does address these deeper issues and that we have many resources available for individuals who do need help. We discussed how the jailing of houseless people who do refuse services won't be effective; jailing someone overnight will not cause a mentally ill houseless person to stop their actions. Houseless people often have cause for being wary of government services as well, so it is hard for them to reach out. Councilmember Buckshnis mentioned that the ordinance tries to address the issues of all of the citizens, which include concerns around cleanliness in the city. Casey mentioned that this ordinance would affect only a few members of the community. VI. FINAL PRESENTATION UPDATE Julie sent the draft of the presentation slides and we reviewed them. Sam, Audrey, and Brook agreed to present at the meeting, and we will ask the group chat if anybody absent wants to speak. By our next meeting, everyone should know what they are reading, have practiced it, and be ready to present to the council. VII. INSTAGRAM POST PLANNING We talked about potential posts for our Instagram, such as a post about recruiting new members. The mental health committee suggested making a post calling attention to the mental health resources posted on the Edmonds City website or making one talking about local mental health resources. Casey suggested we make a post about the 211 number that people can call for food insecurity. Sydney will make a post about recruitment (applications open late August/early September) and Sam will work on the Youth & Government Committee post. VIII. FINAL COMMENTS Casey emailed us about grant opportunities for artists in Edmonds. She also forwarded us job opportunities offered by the City of Edmonds for this summer (you have to be 18 years old). They really need staff this summer, or else they will have to cancel the kids camps. Our last two meetings are in person at the Frances Anderson Center! We also want to try to invite the police chief to our next meeting to talk about the ordinance. IX. ADJOURNMENT Co -Chair Brook Roberts adjourned the meeting at 6:38 PM.
