Meeting Minutes
December 1, 2022
Mission of the CPC is to (7) Encourage citizens to be a part of the solution, (2) Encourage
City staff and citizens to conserve current resources, (3) Work with the City Council to
implement ideas, and (4) Effectively address the future impacts of climate change

1. Call to Order, Review of Agenda, & Introductions
a. Pam was asked to be Temporary Chair in Bryn's absence.
b. Agenda was distributed at the meeting.
c. November meeting minutes approved with three edits:
i. On the first page, change Tristan (chair) to Tristan.
ii. On the second page, e. delete "needed" at the end of the first sentence.
iii. On the second page, f., change "Tulalip tribe" to "Tulalip Tribes
iv. Hank reviewed his comments under city section and agreed no changes
needed
2. City Report
a. Tristan provided the Climate Action Plan (CAP) update. The CAP should be presented
to City Council in January 2023. Discussion ensued regarding the CPC comments.
Tristan confirmed that the CPC's comments on the draft had been addressed in the
version sent earlier this week. CAP review will be on the January agenda.
3. Communication
a. City moving the Edmonds Climate Action website under the City's website to aid in
clarity.
b. Discussion ensued regarding community outreach and marketing and Porchfest
successes. Susan M. shared that having a community member do the social outreach
worked great. In addition, yard signs and the announcements in the newspaper were
successful.
c. Pam shared that having one Edmonds city Facebook and Instagram account for all
city -sponsored activities would help reach more people.
4. Edmonds Climate Champions Project
a. Tristan presented the Decision Package Language for the Climate Champions series.
Highlighted information wording: "rebates, programs and climate action
opportunities specifically geared for Edmonds' residents" and 7 to 8-week public
education and action series". $20K is allocated for this activity.
b. Tristan and Susan shared things to keep in mind:
A one-time event does not meet intent of decision package. Susan
expounded that she envisioned about a series focusing on a singular topic.
Also see heavy involvement/input from our youth and diversity commissions.
ii. Educate in "sound bites"; focus on fun activities like challenges, prizes.
iii. Cynthia commented that the Draft CAP has a lot of those "fun facts".
iv. Success needs to be measurable.
v. Angela commented about moving away from the series to a one-time event.
Climate Champions felt we could reach a wider audience with one event. She
didn't want to lose the ability to reach a broader audience by going to
sessions with panel speakers, for instance. Susan's response was an example
about her son had to write a story about riding the bus.
c. Tristan reviewed a "straw dog" outline for the Climate Champions series. Reference
document at Climate Champions Pitch . Themes presented were:

✓ Active Transportation
✓ Mass Transit Ridership
✓ Vehicle Electrification
✓ Landscaping — (ERViFenme A-2
✓ Sea Level Rise
i. Pam asked to add Lifestyle to the theme highlighting composting.
ii. "Landscaping" will be changed to "Carbon Sequestration."
iii. Susan M. brought up that competitions and challenges with prizes.
iv. Hank talked about Bike Everywhere. For 10 years, the bicycle advocacy group
has been providing bicycle safety education and outreach using Verdant
funding. May need alternate funding in the future. Susan M. stated we need
to emphasize getting the safety program to the streets. Hank responded that
meeting that parents need to be engaged. Susan M. also shared that a holistic
approach is needed - complete streets, bicycle lanes, et al.
v. Susan P. shared we need to add a public suggestion box as we implement the
series.
vi. Susan M. proposed having a sponsor to the host a happy hour to hear EV
owner stories.
vii. Cynthia suggested we have plant -based food provided by sponsors at that
kind of event.
viii. Hank asked what the action items from this presentation are and what the
CPC members would do.
ix. Susan M responded that this is a proposed program. Feedback is wanted
from CPC and the Climate Champions sub -committee.
x. Hank recommended we draw out human vs natural environment, mitigation,
and impact to Edmonds and introduce enough controversy to draw people in.
A. Susan M. referenced a powerful advertising approach - Bondi beach skin
cancer awareness Instagram post.
xii. Steve Cristol recommended we consider a 3D visualizations of sea rise.
xiii. Dawna shared that CSA had a very good map of temperature changes in
Edmonds and concurrent sea level rise.
xiv. Angela asked what does City envision as a timeframe. Susan responded that
she sees a 6-week program implemented near Earth Day/ May.
xv. It was mentioned that the challenge will be engaging for full 6 weeks.
xvi. Cynthia requested we get Tom Hufford's contact information. Partnering with
CRI would be great.
xvii. Susan responded to question as to whether the city is leading the Climate
Champion Series. The city is to provide support and guidance, but the lead
comes from CPC, and specifically the Climate Champions sub -committee.
xviii. Susan suggested that the Climate Champions consider broadening out the
sub -committee adding non -CPC members to assist with this large event.
d. Action Items
Climate Champions will review the series "straw dog" and provide feedback to
CPC.
