2022-04-14 Historic Preservation Commission MinutesCITY OF EDMONDS HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION Summary Minutes of Virtual Meeting April 14, 2022 CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL Chair Doyon called the meeting of the Edmonds Historic Preservation Commission to order at 5:39 p.m. Commissioners Present Annie Doyon (Chair) Larry Vogel (Vice Chair) Chris Deiner-Karr Katie Kelly Tim Raetzloff Commissioners Absent David Preston (absent) MINI TTF S: 1. Approval of March 10, 2021 HPC Minutes Staff Present Michele Szafran, Planner Francis Chapin, Cultural Services Manager Others Present Kristiana Johnson, Edmonds City Council Representative The March 10, 2021 HPC minutes were approved as presented. AGENDA ADDITIONS/CHANGES - None REQUESTS FROM THE AUDIENCE - None NEW BUSINESS 1. CLG Grants — There was discussion about possible application for a CLG grant to cover costs for the walking tour brochures, surveys, plaques, and/or advertising. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 1. Recognizing Properties not on the Register Ms. Chapin discussed the Stages of History prof ect which was done with a matching grant from Preserve America to highlight sites that had some historic interest to the community. There was discussion about Historic Preservation Commission Meeting Minutes April 14, 2022 Pagel of 2 the challenge of recognizing sites that are of historic interest, but not able to be on the Register. There was a suggestion to have a second list of historic sites recognized with plaques by the Arts Commission. Ms. Chapin explained issues related to public art funds and artist -made plaques. There was also some interest in doing a home tour like they do up in Snohomish. 2. Walking Tour • Dates — Vice Chair Vogel will talk with representatives of the Farmers Market to discuss opportunities for walking tours. • Speaking points — Vice Chair Vogel was contacted by Lynn Carpenter, Edmonds Woodway class of 1961, about doing an informal walking tour of murals and historic buildings for her graduating class. This will be a chance to dry run the tour. • Scavenger Hunt —There was discussion about possible partnerships with Edmonds Downtown and the museum. 3. Newsletter — Preservationist Resurrection - Chair Doyon and Vice Chair Vogel shared a draft revised layout of the newsletter and asked for feedback on how to use the free space. Some initial ideas were to highlight already registered properties, success stories, advertising, and interesting facts about Edmonds history. 4. HPC Member Recruitment — Ms. Szafran shared that there were two applicants. COMMISSION CHAIR COMMENTS - None COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Raetzloff thanked Ms. Chapin for coming to the meeting. He hopes they can find a way to make it work out. Vice Chair Vogel concurred. Ms. Chapin expressed interest in being part of the mural tour with the high school group with Vice Chair Vogel. Vice Chair Vogel and Chair Doyon indicated they would come up with a proposal for recognizing sites not on the Register.
