2023-01-05 Climate Protection Committee MinutesCity of Edmonds - Mayors Climate Protection Committee ("CPC") Meeting Minutes January 5, 2023 Mission of the CPC is to (1) Encourage citizens to be a part of the solution, (2) Encourage City staff and citizens to conserve current resources, (3) Work with the City Council to implement ideas, and (4) Effectively address the future impacts of climate change In Attendance: On -Site (Brackett Meeting Room): Committee Members: Cynthia Pruitt, Pam Tauer (Temporary Chair), Hank Landau, Angela Winzen Staff: Sarah Brinkley, Tristan Sewell Council Rep: Susan Paine Resident: Nancy Johnson (Interfaith Group) Zoom: Committee Members: Steve Cristol, Dawna Lahti, Nancy Johnson (resident participating) 1. Welcome & Agenda 2. Check -In a. Angela Winzen moved and Steve Cristol seconded a motion to approve the minutes (as corrected during discussion). The motion passed unanimously. b. Pam asked that "Communication" be added to the agenda every meeting. c. Elections were postponed until Bryn Chighizola can be consulted. 3. City Report a. CAP update: Councilmember Paine reported that the CAP should be presented to City Council sometime in mid -January to mid -February 2023 (Jan. 17 or Feb. 3). b. Solar Grant: Tristan Sewell will be meeting with people submitting a proposal for Housing Hope. 4. City Council Report a. Councilmember Paine reported that the council passed the budget on December 21, 2022. b. They also approved measures to offer gift cards for gas blowers that are turned in, as well as subsidies to Orca cards; must bring in proof of use. (She mentioned CT's plan to add bus routes next year and ST's adjustment to the Light Rail to Lynnwood affected by the concrete strike last year.) 5. Edmonds Climate Champions Project a. Tristan reported that he and Susan McLaughlin felt that the subcommittee's new direction is right. Ms. McLaughlin is comfortable with expanding the timeline per the subcommittee's recommendation. She also likes the idea of including a competition. It's still important that it be youth -centric. b. The kickoff event is scheduled for April 29, 2023 at the Francis Anderson Center. That first event should be fun, bring youth in (which brings their parents, also). (It would not be a "meeting.") The food could focus on plant -based protein and activities could incorporate the themes of "yard" and "spring." (Steve pointed out that there are at least 10 restaurants 1 locally that have plant -based menu items.) Pam stated that Shubert Ho had confirmed last year to participate.) Also focus on what citizens can do. Perhaps have an a -bike as a prize resulting from a competition. c. Look at lessons learned from the 'Taming Big Foot' community competition in 2018. d. The committee recognized the need to expand our resources, reaching out to include others in the community and partner organizations. e. The first, kick-off event will focus on "Lifestyle and Consumption." f. Hank Landau challenged the group to look at what topics (including controversial ones) would bring more people to the series than Shoreline's series (50 people). He suggested sessions on ethics or costs of global warming. NOT SURE THAT'S RIGHT g. Angela wanted the committee to get more people involved through better marketing as well as making sure people become aware of the issues. She suggested city staff who communicate city events be at our next meeting. h. Susan M. had also suggested targeted events (such as on solar panels) to attract people on that one subject. i. Steve suggested that Francis Chapin, the city director of Cultural Affairs be consulted. j. The members discussed how to make additions to the CAP in the future, adding long term actions. k.
