NEW BUSINESS
Commissioner Waite's Retirement
Mr. Chave shared the Mayor's congratulations, thanks and well wishes to Commissioner Waite upon his retirement. He
advised that he would receive some type of formal recognition in the mail. The Commissioners thanked him for his service,
too.
Mr. Chave advised that the City would advertise the vacant positions on the Commission. Chair Scott pointed out that
Commissioner Kelly could be moved into one of the two required "professional" positions. Commissioners were invited to
recruit and/or encourage qualified members of the community to apply. They shared a number of potential candidates, and
individual Commissioners agreed to make contact with them.
Notification of Demolition Permits for Historic Properties
Mr. Chave said he would contact the Building Department to remind them that they are to notify the Commission when
demolition permit applications are submitted for historic properties. The idea is that Commissioner Vogel and Vice Chair
Kelly will visit the properties and take photographs before demolition occurs. The photos will be sent to the Edmonds
Museum via Vice Chair Kelly to be archived into a historical record. It was noted that historic homes on Maple Street and
Bell Street are slated for demolition, and two historic homes on Cherry Road were demolished in 2020.
Meeting Format
The Commissioners agreed that they would continue to hold their meetings virtually for at least the next several months.
They briefly discussed the possibility of offering both in -person and virtual meetings once the pandemic is over, but no
decisions were made.
2021 Historic Calendar
Ms. Scott advised that she sent the photographs for the calendar to the Commissioners today. They agreed that the calendar
could be offered online, but it was too late to print the calendar for 2021.
Marketing the Edmonds Register of Historic Places to Owners of Historic Properties.
Commissioner Preston suggested that the funding that was intended for the 2021 Historic Calendar could be reallocated to
marketing the Register to owners of historic properties. Mr. Chave reminded the Commission that the City recently hired a
part-time information person. He suggested that, starting in January, the Commission could take advantage of community
outreach opportunities such as the newsletter, blog post, etc. Commissioners Preston and Vogel agreed to work together to
prepare materials for the January and February newsletters and blogs. It was noted that links could be provided in the article
to the online Walking Tour of Historic Places Map, to pictures of historic properties, etc.
ACTION ITEMS
There were no action items.
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION CHAIR COMMENTS
Chair Scott commented that 2020 has been an exceptionally unprecedented year, and it is good that the Commissioners have
remained safe and healthy. She announced that she will likely resign from the Commission in the spring so she can focus on
homeschooling and work.
Chair Scott thanked Commissioner Waite for his service on the Commission. She said he has been a mentor, guide and
educator to the other Commissioners. The remainder of the Commissioners concurred.
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner Waite wished the Commission the best of success in the future. He offered to continue to help the
Commission upon request.
ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
