WHEREAS, Public Health services during the last century have been responsible for major improvements in the health
status and longevity of humankind; and
WHEREAS, the control of communicable diseases and environmental threats to health, as well as the promotion of healthy
behaviors, will be a continuing need in order to maintain and advance these gains; and
WHEREAS, Public Health services benefit all people, either directly or indirectly; and
WHEREAS, Public Health services delivered at the local area level bring the greatest benefit to the residents of those local
areas; and
WHEREAS, Snohomish Health District is facing a loss of $2.5 million in annual revenue due to the passage of Initiative 695;
and
WHEREAS, local Public Health services provided by Snohomish Health. District to ;alropst 500.;000 residents of Snohomish
County will be significantly reduced with the budget reductions made necessary by Initiative 695; and
WHEREAS, these service-puts will reduce preventive services in maternal -child health, immunizations, environmental health
and health education, among other services.
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Gary Haakenson, Mayor, and the Edmonds City Council do hereby recognize April 3 - 9, 2000 as Public
Health Week 2000 and emphasize the importance of maintaining funding for local public Health services in the wake of Initiative 695,
and urge the Washington State Legislature to restore full funding for local public health !so that the benefits of these essential services
are not lost "in our community.
