Resolution 779RESOLUTION NO. 779 A RESOLUTION OF THE EDMONDS.CITY COUNCIL SUPPORTING SNOHOMISH COUNTY IN'THEIR EFFORTS IN BUILDING A NEW JUVENILE JUSTICE CENTER WHEREAS, The EDMONDS CITY COUNCIL recognizes the existing juvenile facility, which was built approximately 30 years ago, is inadequate to meet Snohomish County's current and future needs; and WHEREAS, The Snohomish County Superior Judges are unanimous in their support of a new facili.ty to better serve the needs of Snohomish County citizens; and WHEREAS, The EDMONDS CITY COUNCIL supports the concept of a new Juvenile Justice Center for reasons including: 1) The current facility is, severely overcrowded, resulting in misdemeanants not being accepted due to lack of room, posing potential safety concerns to citizens; 2) The obsolete design and technology used in the existing building makes it costly to maintain; and 3) The county's:;•. population has doubled since the current facility was built and is' expected to grow another 50% by the year 2014; and WHEREAS, The EDMONDS CITY COUNCIL believes the concept of a newly constructed Juvenile Justice Center will allow judicial, prosecutorial, probation, and other support staff the necessary tools to more efficiently process juvenile offenders resulting..in ,the possibility,of;:earlier and swifter rehabilitation of juveniles.. 'NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the EDMONDS CITY COUNCIL pledges their support to the concept of..constructing a more efficient. Juvenile Justice.;;r_:, Center to better serve the citizens of Snohomish County. Per the motion passed by the City Council at that meeting, a resolution is attached for Council approval.
