AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EDMONDS,
WASHINGTON, AMENDING THE PROVISIONS OF THE
EDMONDS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CODE BY THE
AMENDMENT OF 20.60.020(a)(1) RELATING TO STAFF
APPROVALS TO DELETE REFERENCES TO WALL
GRAPHICS AND SECTION 20.60.050 TO DEFINE WALL
GRAPHIC, AND FIXING A TIME WHEN THE SAME SHALL
BECOME EFFECTIVE.
WHEREAS, the City Council has initiated a review of its Architectural Design
Board process and ordinance, and
WHEREAS, pending its review the City Council deems it to be in the best
interest of its citizens to incorporate in the City Code a recent interpretative decision of the City
Council in order that property owners can be better apprised of the definition of "wall sign" and
"wall graphic ", NOW, THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EDMONDS, WASHINGTON, DO
ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The Edmonds Community Development Code Section 20.60.020
General Regulations, ations, A. Staff Approval, section 1 and the subparagraphs thereof are hereby
amended to read as follows:

20.60.020 General Regulations.
A. Staff Approval.
1. The Planning Director or designee may refer certain
applications to the Architectural Design Board where the proposed
sign contains one of the following characteristics:
a. The sign is to be free - standing, detached from any
buildings or structures; or
b. The sign will be lighted, will use light- reflective material,
provided, however, that all wall graphics shall be subject to
Architectural Design Board approval.
Section 2. The Edmonds Community Development Code Section 20.60.050
Wall Graphic and Identification Structures is hereby amended to read as follows:
20.60.050 Wall Graphic and Identification Structures
A. Definitions.
1. A wall graphic is a wall sign which in color and form and
without the use of words, is a part of the overall design on
the building(s) in which the business is located. A wall
graphic may be painted or applied (not to exceed 1/2 inch
in thickness) to a building as a part of its overall color and
design, but may not be internally lighted. Internally lighted
assemblies, including those which project from the wall of
the structure, or which are located on any accessory
structure on the site shall be considered wall signs and
comply with the requirements of this chapter.
2. An identification structure is a structure intended to attract
the attention of the public to a site, without the use of

words or symbols identifying the business. Examples
include fountains, sculptures, awnings and totem poles.
B. There are no area restrictions on wall graphics or identification
structures.
Section 3. Effective Date. This ordinance, being an exercise of a power specifi-
cally delegated to the City legislative body, is not subject to referendum, and shall take effect
five (5) days after passage and publication of an approved summary thereof consisting of the
title.
