2014-10-06 Arts Commission Minutesy edmonds ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES October 6, 2014 The Edmonds Arts Commission: dedicated to the arts, an integral part of community life. City of Edmonds Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department PRESENT: Suzy Maloney Samantha Saether Lois Rathvon Joanne Otness Kevin Conefrey STAFF AUDIENCE Frances Chapin Excused - Marni Muir, Beverly Shaw Starkovich The meeting was called to order at 6:01 PM by Suzy Maloney, Chair INTRODUCTIONS — AGENDA - MINUTES — Sept 8, 2014— Otness MOVED, Rathvon SECONDED, MOTION Approved. REPORTS - A. Creative Programs WOTS — Commissioners commented on the success of the Reception with about 150 people there at the peak. The Mayor and the President of EdCC both attended and were introduced. Otness reported that it was a very successful weekend and many good comments were received from conference participants. The keynote gave an excellent presentation, but more time is needed for folks to get back to the FAC. Thanks were expressed by Chapin and Otness for all the help given by Commissioners during the weekend. The Steering Committee will meet in two weeks and a full report on the evaluations and financials will be completed in November since Laurie has limited work hours. 4th Avenue Cultural Corridor Interim Art Projects— Chapin reported that the presentation at City Council was made on September 23rd. Next steps include contacting artists to invite to create design concepts for the various elements. 3. Literary Walk— Otness, Chapin and Rathvon reported on the Literary Walk. It was attended by about 25-30 people on a beautiful day. The introduction session at the Library was excellent, followed by a panel at the Conference Center, publishing information at the Bookshop, and a poetry reading at the Hazel Miller Plaza. Commissioners agreed that the timing, two weeks before WOTS, wasn't good and suggested holding it in early summer. 4. Community Cultural Plan — Chapin discussed implementation of the Community Cultural Plan (CCP) strategies. She will send out a summary of the specific strategies in the five areas of interest, asking Commissioners to review and indicate their greatest area of interest. Commissioners expressed interest in having the Communications consultant attend an EAC meeting and report on the calendar work. B. Capital Projects Edmonds Arts Commission Minutes - 10/6/2014 2 Five Corners — Chapin informed the commission that the artwork in the roundabout project is scheduled to be installed the week of October 20.and inlays will go in soon. C. Funding & Administration 1. Budget - Chapin updated Commissioners that continuation of the part-time Arts Assistant position is in the budget but may require utilizing some EAC program funding for salary as it did in 2014. STAFF REPORT— Chapin noted that the Arts & Humanities proclamation at City Council will be on October 21 and encouraged Arts Commissioners to attend.
