City of Edmonds Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department PRESENT: Suzy Maloney Kevin Conefrey STAFF AUDIENCE Samantha Saether Marni Muir Frances Chapin Lois Rathvon Beverly Shaw Starkovich Joanne Otness The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by Suzy Maloney, Chair INTRODUCTIONS — AGENDA - MINUTES — Oct 6, 2014— Otness MOVED, Muir SECONDED, MOTION Approved. REPORTS - A. Creative Programs WOTS — Otness reported that the 2014 conference revenue was in line with past years, around $17,000 net, down slightly from last year due to extra expenses for the keynote in using the ECA. She commented that there has already been discussion by staff and steering committee about moving the keynote back to the movie theater and not advertising it outside the conference. A preliminary analysis of ratings on the evaluations shows they have been generally good to excellent (about 90%). Approximately 46% of the 175 completing evaluations were first time attendees this year, and the attendees generated about 80 bed nights. Final figures will be compiled by the December meetings of EAC and WOTS steering committee. 4th Avenue Cultural Corridor Interim Art Projects— Chapin asked to review the guidelines for artists that she prepared with assistance from McLellan. Discussion followed with a few minor suggestions for wording. Chapin provided information on three artists for Commissioners to review and will move ahead with inviting them to do designs for the corridor temporary art elements. 3. Community Calendar—.Saether reported on the progress to date, including a test drive training that was held last week. She summarized the approach that will be used to encourage participation in providing information for the calendar. The communications consultant hopes to have the new visitor website and the calendar live by the middle of November. 4. Exhibits — Shaw reported that a new exhibit was hung in the Library of work by Cheryl King. Muir reported on the new joint show in the EAC display case and EAFF gallery, inviting all to attend the reception on Nov 6 at 6:30 pm. 5. Community Cultural Plan — Chapin discussed implementation of the Community Cultural Plan (CCP) strategies, following up on the material sent out for Commissioners to review before the meeting. Commissioners agreed that the five categories and organization of strategies for each seemed good for the basis of further meetings. Discussion followed on how the process should work. The role of Edmonds Arts Commission Minutes—11/3/2014 2 EAC is as the convener, but Commissioners discussed how to identify a workable process. Commissioners also discussed their own specific interest areas. Consensus was reached that initial focus for community meetings starting in the winter to follow up on implementation of the Community Cultural Plan will be on communications, arts education, and programs/events. B. Capital Projects 1. Five Corners — Chapin informed the commission that the roundabout ribbon cutting will be Friday Nov 7 at 2 pm. Commissioners commented on how well the roundabout functions and the appropriateness of the artwork. C. Funding & Administration 1. Future Grants - Chapin updated Commissioners that several grants are under consideration for 2016 that would include a focus on art events and public art elements. STAFF REPORT— Chapin shared the ECA letter regarding support for Kidstock in 2015 and confirmed with Commissioners that $1500 was included in the 2015 budget to help sponsor presenters at this event.
