City of Edmonds Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department PRESENT: Suzy Maloney Kevin Conefrey STAFF AUDIENCE Lois Rathvon Beverly Shaw Starkovich Frances Chapin Tanya Sharp Jonathan Walzer— S Rep Excused: Marni Muir; Lesly Kaplan The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by Suzy Maloney, Chair INTRODUCTIONS — New commissioner Tanya Sharp introduced herself. She is a graphic designer with expertise in user experience design, has a background in web and print graphic design and fine art, and currently works at Inrix. Brief introductions followed by each commissioner. MINUTES-12/5/16 minutes, Conefrey Moved, Shaw Seconded, minutes Approved. 1/3/17 minutes postponed. AGENDA - Chapin added item C.4. Western Arts Alliance REPORTS - A. Creative Programs 1. Project Liaisons — Maloney asked Chapin to describe opportunities for commissioners to be liaisons for Rain Works, Art Outdoors, Music at the Library, and Economic Impact and asked for volunteers. Kaplan and Walzer will work with EPIC on the Rain Works project; Kevin will participate in the Art Outdoors committee; Kevin and Beverly will be liaisons for Music at the Library 2017-18; and Suzy and Tanya will participate on the Economic Impact of Arts advisory group 2. Music at the Library Series — Chapin reported that the Feb 4 Wintergrass preview event attracted over 100 people and was very well received. Shaw noted that the January program was very good and had about 50 people. The next two programs are Thursday March 16 and Wednesday April 26. Chapin will work with the liaisons and the Library to plan for the next season. 3. Public Art Map — Art Outdoors Meeting —Staff is continuing to work on a Google map to show the artwork locations outside in the downtown which will be available on the website. This will be reviewed at a future meeting of the committee. A new print Public Art brochure will be developed in 2017. Proposasl for On the Fence will be discussed at the next meeting. 4. Exhibits — Shaw gave an overview of exhibits and welcomed suggestions from commissioners for future shows. S. Best Book —The reception will be on April 20. The schedule will be sent out so commissioners can plan for assisting with some of the tasks. B. Capital Projects C. Funding & Administration 1. Retreat Agenda/Dates — Retreat will be held on Saturday April 1. Brief discussion of agenda. Commissioners should review the Cultural Plan in terms of where are we now and what is needed in Edmonds Arts Commission Minutes — 2/6/2017 2 future. Chapin will send out the Strategic Work Plan for review but this will not be the focus of the Retreat. 2. Economic Impact of the Arts —Seven submissions were received and 3 selected for interviews. The advisory group will include a City Council member, two Arts Commissioners, and representation from Edmonds Center for the Arts, the Chamber, BID, Diversity Commission, and the Economic Development Commission. A smaller team including Maloney will conduct the interviews. 3. Arts Day in Olympia — Chapin and Mclalwain are the organizers for Snohomish County representation in Olympia on Feb 8. Chapin reviewed the main issues including funding for the State Arts Commission, extension of the Film Competitiveness legislation, legislation to enable formation of local certified Creative Districts, and capital funding for Heritage and Building for the Arts. 4. Western Arts Alliance —The annual meeting will be held in Seattle this year and Chapin is on the host committee. It is an opportunity to support regional visibility for EAC. Shaw Moved and Conefrey Seconded that $150 of budgeted marketing funds be used for EAC logo on signage at the conference, Approved. STAFF REPORT— Chapin reported on a meeting of organizations involved in early dementia and dementia friendly recreational/arts programming held at ECA. OTHER BUSINESS — Jonathan reported that one of his photographs will go to a national level competition. AUDIENCE COMMENTS - Meeting Adjourned at 7:53 PM
