The meeting was called to order at 6:03 PM by Lesly Kaplan, Chair
INTRODUCTIONS —

REPORTS -
A. Creative Programs
1. Summer Concerts Selection — The review for concert applications begins in January. Muir,
Starkovich, Sharp, Kaplan and Kitahara volunteered to listen to music submitted. Erin will prepare
packets for them.
2. Music at the Library— Kaplan and Chapin reported that three concerts in the series of seven have
been presented. First one was very successful with about 50 attending. Second also had about 5C
people. Lots of comments from audience about how much they like the new series. The next
performance is Jan 18.
3. Exhibits/Temporary Art —Chapin presented a brief proposal for an On the Fence project proposed by
a student at EDWHS. Muir Moved, Kaplan Seconded, Approved student project for fence.
4. Best Book — Chapin noted that the reception will be on a Friday this year because of the Music at the
Library program the night before. She encouraged commissioners to attend, and Kitahara offered to
take pictures. Sharp will participate in the judging.

Arts Commissioner Position — Chapin reported that two candidates were recommended after
interviewing all six applicants on Dec 15. Kaplan reported that she, Maloney and Muir interviewed
six talented and enthusiastic candidates. Rhonda Soikowski, a theater instructor at Cornish, was
recommended for the position with required professional experience in performing arts. Patricia
Oneill, recently retired from teaching film media and literature was recommended for the general

position with strong expertise in performing arts. Shaw Moved and Sharp Seconded that the
recommendation to Mayor and Council be approved, Approved.
Economic Impact of Arts Study — Chapin reported that the final report is being reviewed along with a
communications piece which Sharp agreed to review.
Arts & Heritage Day in Olympic — February 7 is Arts & Heritage Day in Olympia with Chapin and
Mclalwain as team captains for Snohomish County advocates.
STAFF REPORT— Chapin reminded Commissioners about the Annual Report at City Council on February 6 and
the Artist Statement Workshop and retreat on March 24. She also reported on an inquiry about the possibility of
creating a plein air painting event and said there was some interest from other parties. She asked Commissioners
to explore the idea and discuss further at a future meeting. Muir suggested a few artists who might be interested.
