City of Edmonds Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department PRESENT: Tanya Sharp Pat Oneill STAFF AUDIENCE Lesly Kaplan Beverly Shaw Starkovich Frances Chapin Suzy Maloney Isabella Wilhelm, student representative Excused: Marni Muir, medical; Rhonda Soikowski, work The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by Lesly Kaplan, Chair MINUTES — Approval of September minutes postponed to December meeting for lack of quorum to vote on that meeting; Oct minutes — Maloney Moved and Shaw Seconded, Approved. INTRODUCTIONS —Welcome to Isabella Wilhelm the new student representative and introductions by all. Isabella is a student at EWHS and she is involved in music performance, plays clarinet, writes and has published poetry, and has always loved Edmonds and the arts. REPORTS - A. Creative Programs 1. Creative District —Chapin updated the commission on submission of the application and stated that she and Patrick will give a brief presentation at the panel review in Olympia on November 19. Commissioners discussed a few points that would be good to include. 2. WOTS wrap up — Chapin and Kaplan reported briefly on the conference. Subsequent discussion focused on a racist incident on Main Street involving a conference attendee and exploring ways to respond and help our city be a welcoming city. Various ideas were discussed including some training at a retreat, meeting with a diversity and inclusion team at another organization, and some discussion of what the Diversity Commission is doing and their successful film series. 3. Commissioner Position / Nominations— Maloney and Kaplan served as the nominating committee and proposed a slate for leadership for 2019 with Sharp as Chair and Soikowski as Vice Chair. Oneill Moved and Shaw Seconded, Approved. The Commissioner will be posted with a Dec 3 deadline and all are encouraged to get the word out. Chapin will consult with HR to get a sentence to add about welcoming diversity. 4. Music at the Library — Chapin reported turnout of over 80 for first event. She is in the process of contracting with a Native American group for April. 5. Public Art — The Koncsek On the Fence proposal was discussed for Civic, shortened if needed and hopefully including a Korean panel. Kaplan Moved and Sharp Seconded, Approved. Commissioners discussed plans for Civic Park. One suggestion was to reflect some of the culture of the bowl including our sister city relationship. The call for artists for Dayton Street Plaza was reviewed and will be posted immediately with a Dec 3 deadline. Edmonds Arts Commission Minutes - 11/5/2018 2 6. Exhibits — Shaw and Chapin reported on the current and next exhibits. An abstract artist will be exhibiting in the Library in the spring. The Hekinan Collection has been showcased in honor of the visiting delegation and the painting received from Hekinan will be in the Display Case. B. Capital Projects C.
